Art Mint stuns with a five-ounce version of their homage to the Gothic magnificence of Notre Dame Cathedral

Our love of Art Mint’s ‘Mandala Art’ series is well documented here, but we also have a special affinity for it. It was only my second Berlin World Money Fair, back in 2015, and this site wasn’t well known by the mints then, but Art Mint could not have been more welcoming, and nor could we have been more impressed by the debut Mandala release, even choosing to revisit it again when new images became available.

In the intervening years since then, we’ve watched this series develop, adding enhanced detailing, and an exquisite use of high-relief to bring the concept to life using many world cultures. In a few days time, we’ll have a look at the tenth, and possibly last in the series, and a special that encapsulates them all, but first, we’ll take this quick look at an enhanced reissue of, for me at least, the highlight of the series.

Mandala V, issued in 2019, was titled ‘Gothic’ and morphed that mandala concept of cyclical repeating patterns, to reproduce the architectural style employed by the great cathedral builders of the medieval period, most often manifested as sublime stained-glass windows. You can see it in our comprehensive Coin Series Profile of the range. In April 2019, the unthinkable happened, and Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, was almost destroyed by fire. Shortly after, Art Mint issued a special edition of the Gothic Mandala, which, fortunately, had been designed around one of the rose windows in the cathedral anyway.

The new version was just stunning, and has gone on to be incredibly collectable in its own right, reproducing the North Rose Window. Art Mint donated money from the sale of each coin to the rebuilding works of Notre Dame. With Mandala Art finishing soon, and with this coin so hard to get, they made the decision to do an ultra-rare special-edition of the three-ounce original, but this one tipping the scales at five ounces, and 65 mm diameter.

What a stunning coin! It remains as perfect today as it was half a decade ago, and if you’re in a position to add this coin to your collection, you’re very lucky. Packed with design excellence, the highest quality strike, and historical significance, it ticks all the boxes for being a classic numismatic. Only 100 will be minted, and it’s available to order now. As before, some proceeds will go to the Notre Dame restoration fund.
