2017 YEAR OF THE ROOSTER: A GUIDE TO THE GOLD & SILVER LUNAR COINS

Without question the most widespread theme in modern numismatics, the Lunar Calendar has drawn in mints and producers from all regions of the globe. The choice of designs and sizes is quite incredible, going from 0.5 grams up to coins 40,000 times that size, with ranges encompassing both gold and silver. Colouring, gilding, high-relief or with embedded gems, there’s usually something for every taste. For 2014 and 2015 we tried to compile definitive guides to all the coins available, a huge amount of work, and after a year off we’re back with the Year of the Rooster.

Starting on 29th January and running until 15 February 2018, the Year of the Red Fire Rooster is said to represent people that are hard-working, shrewd, bold, boastful and correct. Famous roosters have included Confucius, Catherine the Great, Amelia Earhart, Rudyard Kipling and Groucho Marx. Whatever the background, it’s clearly a canvas broad enough to inspire designers to try something different.

Many major mints issue lunar coins, the most famous being the Perth Mints seminal Lunar Series II, their second, almost complete run through the lunar cycle. Several bullion series are running in competition, the most notable being the Royal Mint’s Shengxiao Collection. A favourite of ours, the Treasures of Oz Tokelau range has stopped its run sadly, but there remains a decent selection. The commemorative market remains open to variation and despite coins being released ridiculously early every year (Dog coins are already starting to appear even though the Year of the Dog is 9 months away), new ones are still appearing, although.

We’ve altered this guide from prior years by sorting the coins by issuing country instead of by mint. It’s a more logical system and takes into account the difficulty we have in tracking down the producer of some of the more esoteric coins. This guide will be updated as new coins appear so keep an eye on the changelog button for them as they won’t be immediately apparent because of the tabbed layout. Let us know if we’ve missed any. We may add privy-mark bullion coins, but haven’t decided yet.

PERTH MINT OPAL ROOSTER

A series that lasted for eight coins spread over four years from 2012-15, Australian Opal features a stylised circular area in the centre of the reverse face that incorporates pieces of opal. Following the end of the series, the mint kept the concept alive with a single annual design for the lunar market, this years being the second to appear.

MINT OF POLAND RUSSIAN LUNAR

A rare one, this coin is apparently struck by the Mint of Poland for, we assume, a Russian or Ukrainian client. It’s a standard ounce in weight, sterling silver and with some selective colouring to the reverse face. The reverse face isn’t particularly rooster-like, looking more similar to a Phoenix, but it’s a clean design regardless. The obverse is noteworthy for its excellent design, even if it is a little inscription heavy. We’ve only seen this one on EBay where they sell for a little over $100.

BANK OF CHINA LOTUS ROOSTER

There are five basic sets of designs again this year with four different shapes as there were last year with the Horse ranges, for a total of seventeen different coins spread across gold and silver.

SInce the Bank of China decided to eschew the standard weights used by all other mints for a decimalised system, coin sizes have changed slightly but not in any dramatic way. Sizes range from 3 grams to a staggering 10,000 grams (10kg) in gold and from 30 grams to a kilo in silver. A surprising thing we’ve noticed in previous years is the lack of a one-ounce (or now 30g) gold coin in any of the designs.

The coins were minted at multiple locations; Shenzhen Guobao Mint, Shenyang Mint and Shanghai Mint Co. They’re distributed by China Gold Coin Corporation.

OBVERSE: The emblem of the People ‘s Republic of China, lined with years of more than auspicious decoration, and published national name.

REVERSE: Rooster shape, lined with decorative rooster pattern, and published amount and “Ding You” words.

TATOO ART LUNAR ROOSTER

First appearing two years ago from the Son Montuno Mint, Lunar Skulls was an instant hit. The design was wholly unlike anything else produceed for the lunar market, using artwork from a Portland, Oregon based tattoo artist, Kiana Roo. Last years Teay of the Monkey was considerably more problematic however. A dispute between the people involved in producing the coin led to the release of two competing coins. Son Montuno stuck with the artist and issued a similar theme but issued for Palau instead of Ghana. A German dealer kept Ghana as the issuer, but used a different artist for the reverse face.

Fortuantely for all some agreement was reached and now both parties have independant lines. This one now goes by the name Tattoo Art and for 2017 has employed colour for the first time. Struck to a high-relief, it remains a new twist on a relatively conservative genre. An ounce of fine silver in weight, mintage will be limited to 500 with each coin being supplied with a certificate of authenticity.

OBVERSE: In the central part of the coin sits the emblem of the African state of Ghana. Underneath it in a clean area are the inscriptions REPUBLIC OF GHANA and the denomination 5 CEDIS. A radial segmented pattern design borders the emblem.

MDM DEUTSCHE JADE ROOSTER

This is now the sixth year that this attractive series, again from MDM, has been released. The highlight feature of this range is a Burmese jade ring carrying gilded lettering in English and Chinese. In the centre sits a gilded representation of the lunar animal. The border carries a struck pattern of animals which looks pretty good although we don’t think this years looks as good as the 2015 goat did. The coin is two ounces in weight and has the nicely detailed emblem of the The Lao People’s Democratic Republic on the obverse.

Burmese Jade, called Jadeite, is considered the finest in the world and believed precious in China back as far as the 13th century. It was used for hardstone carving as far back as 6,000B.C. The various varieties of Jade have had a great cultural significance for thousands of years.

SINGAPORE MINT SILVER LUNAR ROOSTER

The Monetary Authority of Macau proudly presents the Macau Lunar Coin Collection (2008 – 2019), which is exclusively minted and marketed by The Singapore Mint. The Macau Lunar Rooster Coin, the tenth in this collection is issued in conjunction with the arrival of the 2017 Year of the Rooster.

The obverse side of the coin features the outline of a magnificent rooster, accompanied by blooms of rosy Celosia cristata, also known as cockscomb. The name cockscomb was given to this flower due to its similarity to the comb of the rooster. The rooster’s comb or crown, has the Chinese words ‘鸡冠‘whereby its ‘冠’ has the same pronunciation as the ‘官’ from the word, ‘Official’. Therefore, the arrangement of a rooster with cockscomb flowers symbolises career progressions due to the Chinese words, “官上加官”, literally meaning to add another ‘crown’ on top of a ‘crown’.

The reverse side features the St. Dominic’s Church. Located within the Historic Centre of Macau, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the church is one of Macau’s oldest historical structures, built in 1587. Today, its bell tower, refurbished into the Treasure of Sacred Art Museum, hosts a collection of around 300 artefacts. A church of both Portuguese and Spanish influences, its unmistakable Baroque style yellow and green façade stands prominently in the heart of Macau’s famous St Dominic’s Square.

The gold coin is another CIT staple, a 0.5g minigold which are becoming increasingly popular of late, in no small part due to this companies fine selection of issues over the last few years.

The silver incorporates a pair of new techniques being seen here for the first time. The coin is struck as a ‘Black Proof’, and it also uses new striking technique called HiCarv which appears to concentrate a section of ultra-high relief on a single part of the coin and with a different look, almost like it was rough-hewn from granite. The second technique involves the handmaking of the relief object on the coins reverse face. Because of this, each piece is completely unique.

An annual release, the Lunar Good Fortune set are a pair of coins struck in a format that the Perth Mint might well consider its signature format, a 40.6 mm diameter, one-ounce coloured silver round. Fortunately, they do them well and regular Perth Mint artist Tom Vaughan has done a fine job with these. Colourful, yet with plenty of clean background detail, the pair are packaged in a grey snapper box inside a brightly coloured shipper. A COA is included.

PERTH MINT LUNAR CALENDAR RECTANGULAR SET

Another annual release, the Lunar Calendar set of four rectangular, coloured coins has remained a popular one. The artwork is unique to this set, done by another Perth Mint regular, Natasha Muhl. The rectangular format gives the coloured element of the design a better chance to breathe because of the expansion of the background setting and Natasha has taken good advantage.

In most other regards apart from the shape, these remain a standard Perth Mint type of coin. The long latex ‘Nimbus’ frame is a good way to display any coin, although the benefits here are a little less because the obverse design is such a common, unadventurous one. Supplied in a coloured shipper with a COA.

OBVERSE: Each coin is issued as legal tender under the authority of the Government of Tuvalu and features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the 2017 year-date, and the monetary denomination on its obverse.

ROYAL MINT LUNAR SHENGXIAO PROOF

Known as The Shēngxiào (or Chinese zodiac) Collection, The Royal Mint’s lunar coins are produced specifically for the United Kingdom, and blend Chinese tradition with British craftsmanship. This year sees the introduction of a UK kilo coin to The Shēngxiào for the first time.

British-Chinese artist and printmaker Wuon-Gean Ho, designer of The Royal Mint’s lunar collection, has incorporated clever wordplay into her 2017 design – a British breed Marsh Daisy rooster is pictured alongside ten blooms of the plant of the same name, which is often known by the familiar name of Sea-thrift. The word ‘thrift’ can also refer to wise use of money. “Sea-thrift is common to the areas where these birds live.” said Wuon-Gean.

The coins are supplied in bold red packaging, together with a booklet that reveals the customs that inspired the artist. All coins in the range are limited, with mintages featuring the number ‘8’ thought to be lucky in Chinese culture.

The Royal Mint’s lunar bullion coins are struck as limited mintage one-ounce 999.9 fine gold coins, and one-ounce 999 fine silver coins, and are available to buy in tubes of 10 or 25 coins, dependent on the metal purchased.
