Mint of MK continues its extravagant interpretation of the zodiac symbols with the addition of Taurus, Cancer, and Gemini
For our second daily look at new issues, we’ve alighted on Mint of MK, who have released quite a number of coins over the last few weeks, many we’ve yet to cover. Our pick this time is the continuation of their new ‘Twelve Zodiac Signs’ range, which is the spiritual successor to their impressive ‘9 Dragons’ range of 36 coins, which can be seen in full in our huge Coin Series Profile.
As the name suggests, this will be a twelve-coin collection, each of which will showcase one of the famous zodiac symbols that have been a part of many cultures for centuries. Unlike 9 Dragons, there will be a single finish for each release, but it’s a considerably more extravagant one than before, and employs enamel. We’ve already covered the debut issue, Aries.
Each coin tips the scales at five-ounces of 0.999 silver, and is struck with an impressive level of high-relief, finished off with some beautiful antiquing. The rim of the reverse face is raised so that the enamel can be held in place during the finishing process, something obligatory on coins of this type. Under the enamel, the coin has a glow-in-the-dark effect applied (the sparkling green in the images), and the resin has its own UV effect, which appears multi-shaded blue. They combine to great effect, as you can see in the excellent images Mint of MK provides.
The latest issue came out earlier today, and is the fourth to date. Cancer, represented by a crab, sits in the centre of the coin, its main shell proud of the enamel, surrounded by a flourishing background border pattern. Also arriving recently is Gemini, which features a very pretty design of the twins facing away from each other, but merged into a single entity. The border here is more intricate, and defined, than Cancer. Finally, we have Taurus, with a powerful bull’s head sitting inside multiple rings of patterns. This one has the Zodiac name prominently featured, and the eyes seem to have had extra attention to enhance the glow.
The obverse is relatively simple, using the Jody Clark effigy of King Charles III, surrounded by a ring of inscriptions detailing the composition, and issuance of the coin. The design is common to the series, and not specific to each release. The focus is clearly on that reverse face. Each coin is presented in one of those terrific solid acrylic blocks, wrapped in a themed slipcover, and with a Certificate of Authenticity. No complaints there.
These come across as quite exquisite designs, keeping a consistent base style, but offering enough leeway to give each a distinct flavour of their own. The zodiac symbols themselves are finely detailed, especially where they sit proud of the enamel. They all look like top-end numismatics, and that feeling is highlighted by the tiny mintage of just 99 pieces per design. Not many will get all twelve, we’d imagine, but for those that do, they’ve almost certainly obtained the best representation of the Zodiac we’ve seen on coins to date. Available to order now.

Very interesting, they probably use phosphorus for the effect GITD. Do you know if they include UV light in the box ?
They don’t. I guess as a 12-coin series, it wasn’t deemed viable, which is fair enough.
