MDM dips into its wide pop-culture range with Transformers coins, and a Harry Potter high-relief silver behemoth

Pop-culture coins remain extremely popular, attracting a wide variety of franchises, and coming to fruition in an equally wide variety of styles. It’s often a testing ground for new design types, and innovation abounds, if not always successfully. A few mints specialise in this genre, with the NZ Mint (now Agoro) almost completely dedicated to it, and others like German producer, MDM Wholesale, maintaining a healthy range, without abandoning other genres.

One of MDM’s licences is the overwhelmingly popular Wizarding Universe of Harry Potter. They’re not the only producers issuing for Potter, but they are one of the most ambitious, and their latest is a great case in point. Struck in a full kilo of fine silver, and utilising their very impressive multi-layer technique, this is the third Harry Potter coin of this type in the range to date, following Hogwarts and Quidditch issues.

Despite rocking a 100 mm diameter, and thick with it, the standout of this coin is the incredible sense of depth. It’s almost like you’re peering into a scene, rather than at it. In the foreground are superb depictions of Harry Potter and Voldemort, ready for magical battle. In the far background sits Hogwarts, and the surrounding cliffs. It’s all very impressive with its antique finish.

The obverse of the coin is just an effigy of King Charles III, surrounded by the usual issue inscriptions. The presentation looks to be of the highest quality. Themed as you’d expect, the double opening doors on the front make display easy, something important given the size of this, and the likelihood the buyer has other memorabilia. There’s no chance this will get lost like a one-ounce coin would! Available to order now, we’ll add this to our huge Thematic Guide to Harry Potter coins shortly.

2024 HARRY POTTER VS VOLDEMORT

The second release we’re looking at isn’t as impressive, but it’s a neat item, nevertheless. The Transformers have taken on a new lease of life over the last decade with a slew of big budget films, and all the associated stuff that comes with them. The latest is this set of two, one-ounce silver coins, in some especially neat packaging.

Each of the two coloured and matte gilded coins is done for a separate character, although this seems to come down to just the name on the reverse face. They have a ‘toothed’ hole in their centre, which locks them into the box, and concentric rings to mimic tape on a spool. That box is shaped like a large audio cassette, aping an 80s range of mini-cassette toys produced by Hasbro in Japan. It hinges open to reveal the coins, which almost look like tape spindles in their location. It’s an interesting set for the Transformers fan, although the basic design will limit appeal for the general coin collector, we feel. Also available to order now.
