One of the best looking bullion coins around, the Wedge-Tailed Eagle coin designed by John Mercanti for the Perth Mint had its debut back in 2014. First released as high-relief silver and gold coins with mintages of 10,000 and 1,000 respectively back in January 2014, they followed up with a standard silver proof and a fantastic five-ounce high relief coin last May. This year has seen similar releases.
Apart from the date, the coins have not changed in design and this latest batch includes the proof silver 1 oz, as well as a a beautiful 2 oz high-relief coin, and a very rare 5 oz gold with a tiny 99 unit mintage. There’s a version of this coin to suit every budget, and it’s a design we recommend everyone have a version of. Next month will see a 1 oz proof platinum release.
5 oz GOLD PROOF
The Wedge-Tailed Eagle is Australia’s largest bird of prey and one of the biggest eagles in the world. Found throughout mainland Australia, Tasmania and southern New Guinea, the Wedge-Tailed Eagle has a wingspan of up to 2.7 metres, and displays a long, wedge-shaped tail and feathered legs.
This majestic bird is known to soar through the sky for hours on end, frequently reaching altitudes of up to 2,000 metres. In the heat of the day, the eagle makes use of hot thermal air currents that drift up from the ground to reach these dizzying heights, whilst expending little energy.
The Wedge-Tailed Eagle can be found from sea level areas to alpine regions, though they favour forested land and open country, to rainforests and coastal heaths. They can often be seen perched in trees and on rocks and cliffs, from where they have a clear view of their surroundings, enabling them to defend their territory and identify prey.

Mik,
Have you been able to find out anything about the 5 oz silver high relief release in Australia?
It is not on the Perth release list for Oct., and by law 10% (which is just 250 coins) has to be reserved for
Aussies, so I suppose it will be in Nov or Dec. But if Aussie dealers really only get 250 coins
it is going to be very hard to get one.
