Precious Metal Collectors are back after a hiatus with a new copper-cored coin, Eight Dragon Buddha

It’s been a few months since we covered a new release from Singaporean producer, Precious Metal Collectors, but they’re back with a new coin in their signature copper/silver hybrid range. The company has been very successful since it debuted a few years ago, rapidly gaining our attention with a striking, and varied selection of coins. They decided to reorganise, to better cope with their ambitious release schedule, and that’s now complete.

The first of the new batch uses a familiar format and theme at PMC – a bi-metal composition for the former, and Asian mythology for the latter. Whatever the familiarity, they have not disappointed with the finished result. The levels of relief on the coin are simply extraordinary, and they’ve been combined with copious amounts of detail everywhere. The depth of the coin has been enabled partly by a convex obverse. Honestly, the images should tell you more than I could.

The subject is the Eight Dragon Buddha, described by the mint as “Bringing awe, power and fortune, the eight celestial dragons surround the Buddha in a display of protection, admiration and obedience. Being the most powerful celestial being in Feng Shui, the design with eight dragons is forged to symbolise wealth and fortune in the auspicious number of eight. According to the legend in the Lotus Sutra, there were eight dragon kings who attended the very first preaching of the sutra by the Buddha. Each dragon king was accompanied by several hundreds of thousands of followers. In Japanese folk lore, the eight dragon kings were respectfully called “hachidai-ryou” in a similar tale.”

The process of this issue is called Bi-metal Reverse, combining a 1 oz silver base, with a 6 oz copper section doing the heavy lifting. At 60 x 40 mm, and sporting a chonky thickness, it’s a big coin, and an impressive one. If Asian myths and legends are your passion – look no further. The mintage is set at 688 pieces, and there’s a choice of antique silver (our favourite), and fully gilded. The coin will be presented in a themed box, with a Certificate of Authenticity, and is available to order now.
