Mint XXI’s Great Greek Mythology series adds Athena, Dionysus, and Hermes for its seventh tranche of releases

There’s one of each size in the three coins that make up the seventh release tranche in Mint XXI’s epic ‘Great Greek Mythology’ series. A collection of 36 issues, in a mix of 1oz, 2oz, and 3oz sizes, it will be released in twelve groups of 3 coins over several years. We’ve seen enough of them by now to know this will be an exceptional set when completed.

This time around we have a 3oz Hermes coin, a 2oz Athena, and a 1oz Dionysus, all replete with signature high relief, and with a single element gilded. Contrasting with the antique finish, these are all excellent additions to this huge series. As before, we’ve added this trio to our comprehensive Coin Series Profile of the collection, and future releases will be added as well. Available to order now.

HERMES (3 oz)

Hermes, the Greek god of transitions, boundaries, and communication, occupies a significant place in Greek mythology and religion. Son of Zeus and the nymph Maia, Hermes was known for his cunning, wit, and agility. His domain extended from guiding souls to the underworld to facilitating trade and commerce.

In Ancient Greece, Hermes was worshipped as a protector of travellers, merchants, and thieves alike. He was often depicted as a youthful figure with winged sandals and a herald’s staff, symbolizing his role as a messenger of the gods.

Hermes played a central role in numerous myths and legends, including his role as the messenger of the Olympian gods and his involvement in the birth of the infant god Dionysus. Additionally, he was credited with inventing the lyre and guiding the souls of the deceased to the underworld.

ATHENA (2 oz)

Athena, a prominent figure in Greek mythology, was the goddess of wisdom, warfare, and civilization. According to myth, she sprang fully grown and armoured from the forehead of her father, Zeus, after he swallowed her pregnant mother, Metis. Renowned for her strategic prowess, Athena became the patroness of Athens, the city named in her honour, following a competition with Poseidon.

Athena played a pivotal role in various myths, such as aiding Perseus in slaying Medusa and supporting Odysseus in the Trojan War. Her temple, the Parthenon, atop the Acropolis in Athens, stood as a testament to her revered status.

Beyond her martial attributes, Athena represented the embodiment of wisdom, justice, and arts. Her significance persisted in Ancient Greece and beyond, influencing literature, art, and philosophy.

DIONYSUS (1 oz)

Dionysus, the Greek god of wine, ecstasy, and fertility, has a rich and multifaceted history deeply ingrained in ancient mythology. Believed to be the son of Zeus, the king of the gods, and Semele, a mortal woman, Dionysus is often depicted as a youthful, exuberant figure, embodying both the joys and dangers of excess.

In Greek mythology, Dionysus embarked on epic journeys, spreading his teachings and cultivating the vine across the ancient world. He was worshipped through various rituals and festivals, including the famous Dionysian Mysteries, which involved ecstatic celebrations and communal rites.

The cult of Dionysus evolved over time, influencing art, literature, and philosophy in Ancient Greece and beyond. He became associated with the theatre, particularly tragedy and comedy, as well as with the concept of rebirth and transformation.
