The relentless movie juggernaut that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) powers on this month with the premiere of its latest entrant, Captain America: Civil War. The 13th movie to be released since Iron Man debuted back in 2008, Civil War is the first in Phase 3 that will likely include as many as 11 new films from now until 2019, probably ending with the second Avengers: Infinity Gauntlet movie. A huge clash of heroes taking sides over the government imposition of a superhero registration scheme, the movie is inspired by, and takes elements from, a comic series from 2006-7 by Mark Millar. Early buzz is that the movie could be the finest to date, some feat given the generally very high quality of the series, and the studio will make shedloads of wonga.

The Sunshine Mint have a history with Marvel-themed coins going back a few years with such sets as Superman and the Avengers, so this isn’t new territory for the mint. There are certainly no surprises with most of the coins, a simple coloured coin carrying character images on their reverse faces. A pair of them are ying and yang inspired, locking together to form a fight scene. All told, there are six, one-ounce coins in the set, although making five in design, each individually packaged in a brightly decorated tin showing scenes of the character within. They are sold seperately, each selling for $69.99, except for the shaped pair that are sold together for $144.99. Alternatively, and saving a decent amount of money, you can purchase all five tins as a set, all packaged in a metal lunchbox tin, heavily themed all over with images based on the movie. This sells for $379.99, so for just $30 more than the five basic coins, you get the two-ounce split pair, and the fancy packaging that still comes with the individual tins as well. On top of that there’s a 2g silver Certificate of Authenticity included, as well as two big movie posters. If you want a few of these coins it seems almost a no-brainer to get the whole kit and kaboodle instead.

It’s quite the package for the Marvel Comics fan, and there are millions of those now that the movies are literally as big as it gets, but it’s less appealing for the hardcore coin collector. Definitely one for the gift market we think and that’s a great thing given how many people products like this can bring into commemorative coin collecting that had no idea before. We’ve seen them at APMEX and at Modern Coin Mart to date, and no doubt the sets availability will widen as time progresses, but for the moment APMEX seem to be the cheapest out there. Those who like their coins graded and encapsulated may want to hang out to see if MCM offer them like this again. Available to order now, it should ship later this week.
