Star Trek returns to Perth Mint with a tribute to the ultra-classic episode Mirror Mirror

While the New Zealand Mint’s range of Star Wars coins has powered on relentlessly, the Perth Mint’s Star Trek range has been quiet since last October when they launched the excellent tricorder packaged 2oz coin. May seems to be a month of new releases however, with a new coin here and two more due later today from the Royal Canadian Mint.

This coin is a continuation on what has gone before in terms of specification. A Perth Mint speciality, it’s a 40.6 mm coloured one-ounce silver coin and comes in heavily themed packaging. The box is one that’s been used repeatedly in the past, a white plastic round item with a blue LED light that comes on to illuminate the coin when the lid is opened. Those who have purchased the captain or ship coins in the past will be familiar with it.

The coin is themed around an episode, one of the most beloved of all from the original series called Mirror Mirror. The story involves Kirk, McCoy, Uhura and Scotty being mistakenly transported to a brutal parallel version of their own universe, it is widely considered Star Trek at its very finest and the concept was revisted in a later incarnation of the franchise. The design is said to be by Perth Mint regular Jennifer Mackenna but the artwork is an excellent piece by artist Gary Pullin who remains uncredited sadly.

The obverse remains the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank Broadley, surrounded by all the inscriptions, none being present on the main face that wasn’t part of the original artwork. Available to buy today from the Perth Mint website or from one of their extensive dealer network, it will sell for $115.00 AUD with a mintage set at 3,000.

2017 STAR TREK ‘MIRROR, MIRROR’ PROOF SILVER COIN

MINTS DESCRIPTION

Mirror, Mirror was one of Star Trek’s most iconic episodes and aired for the first time in 1967 during the second season of Star Trek: The Original Series. The episode uses the evil counterparts of some of Star Trek’s most beloved characters to explore the darker side of humanity and the premise that everyone has two sides to their personality. Yet, peace and harmony are the only way we can survive and prosper.

DESIGN: The coin’s reverse portrays a colour image of mirror Spock and Spock prime facing each other as they appear in the Mirror, Mirror episode of Star Trek: The Original Series, against a backdrop of the planet Earth bisected by a sword. The design also includes Spock’s uniform insignia and The Perth Mint’s traditional ‘P’ mintmark.

The coin’s obverse depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the monetary denomination, and the 2017 year-date.

PACKAGING: The coin is housed in a Star Trek themed case which lights up when the lid is opened, within a Star Trek themed shipper. Each coin is accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
