Perth Mints genre-creating ancient god coins enter their fourth year with the Norse Goddess Freya

Antique finish and a high-relief strike, two-ounce (62.2g) in weight and fancy packaging all point to one of the most popular trends in modern silver numismatics, ancient mythology. Pretty much kicked off in 2014 by the release of the Perth Mint’s classic Greek Gods series, the format and theme clicked with collectors in a big way. There are now multiple series on the go from several producers and the quality is extremely high.

We were surprised and even a little disappointed that after the prevalence of Odin and Norse themed coins in 2015, that the Perth Mint should choose Odin to debut another Norse series. With so much ancient mythology untouched, we feel it was a missed opportunity to stay in front of the pack, especially with the competition from Gainesville, Scottsdale and especially Choice Mint, being so intense. However, they did Odin well and the next coin Thor, even better. After Greek Gods had finished its run, Greek Goddesses followed in 2015. The same is true in the Norse world and it’s the turn of the ladies to shine.

Norse Goddesses will again be a trilogy, with Frigg and Hel being the remaining pair to come, but the first coin is Freya. The design fits in well with what has gone before, although not as dynamic looking as the aforementioned Odin and Thor. Perth Mint regular artist Ing Ing Jong continues to design these after taking over duties from Tom Vaughan, the designer responsible for the first two sets. The obverse remains the common one that all previous sets have had, with the exception of the year date of course.

Packaging remains top notch, the wooden box being themed well and plush inside (the coin isn’t encapsulated). An outer shipper is nice and there’s a serialised certificate carrying the number of the coin from the 2,000 being minted. Selling for $200 AUD, we’d imagine these will sell out, although more slowly than its Greek counterpart did. We have a full Coin Series Profile to the range out with some great images of the previous nine coins and we’ll add this one in shortly. Available now, most of our sponsors will have these in.

2017 NORSE GODDESSES 01: FREYA SILVER COIN

MINTS DESCRIPTION

The first coin in the new Norse Goddesses series features Freya, the goddess of love, beauty, fertility, battle and death. Freya was also considered a symbol of sensuality and of the wile and untamed forces of nature.

REVERSE: The reverse of the coin depicts Freya with her sword in her left hand and wearing her magical feathered cloak. Also featured in the design is a cat perched on her right shoulder, her golden bristled boar ‘Hildisvini’, a shield, and a battlefield in the background. The inscription FREYA and The Perth Mint’s traditional ‘P’ mintmark also feature in the design.

OBVERSE: Issued as legal tender under the authority of the Government of Tuvalu, the coin’s obverse depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the 2017 year-date, and the monetary denomination.

To capture the depth and detail of the design, the coin is struck in high relief to a rimless format, and has been individually ‘antiqued’ to give it a unique finish conveying the surface abrasions of an ancient artefact. As a result of this treatment, the appearance of each coin may vary.

PACKAGING: The coin is housed in a prestigious square wooden display case with stunning engraved detail on its lid.  The coin is accompanied by a numbered Certificate and packaged in a themed shipper.
