Numiscollect debut the thirteenth issue in their long running Biblical Stories coin series

On its thirteenth release since the debut in 2011, Numiscollects Biblical Stories series of silver coins is joined by the tale of Daniel in the lions den. Each of these coins is struck in silver, from 2017 at a fineness of 0.999 (up from sterling 0.925 previously) and this latest release is no different. The signature feature of this range has always been a small graphic that’s been filled with a coloured enamel.

One of the more well known tales from the bible, Daniel in the Lions Den has also inspired some impressive works of art. One of those, painted in 1615 by the Dutch master Sir Peter Paul Rubens, has formed the basis for the coin. There’ve been some changes, the main one being the removal of the cave background in the painting and its replacement with a view of the ancient city of Babylon, but the inspiration is clear and well chosen.

The level of detail in the strike looks first class. While this might be expected on a high-end range, its presence here is to be commended, proof that quality can be maintained on the less ambitious ranges. The enamelled highlight in this case is the mane on a small lion glyph at the top of the coin. The coin comes boxed with a certificate, all enclosed in a coloured and themed shipper. Shipping from mid-September, the coin should retail for around the €70 mark. A full guide to the series is available here and we’ve added this one to it.

2017 DANIEL IN THE LIONS DEN SILVER COIN

MINTS DESCRIPTION

A new issue in this award winning series! This 13th issue is issued in PURE .999 silver. The new motive is Daniel in the Lion’s Den with with a lion and blue holy land color above it.

The story of Daniel in the lions’ den tells how Daniel is raised to high office by his royal master Darius the Mede, but jealous rivals trick Darius into issuing a decree which condemns Daniel to death. Hoping for Daniel’s deliverance, but unable to save him, the king has him cast into the pit of lions. At daybreak he hurries back, asking if God had saved his friend. Daniel replies that God had sent an angel to close the jaws of the lions, “because I was found blameless before him.” The king has those who had conspired against Daniel, and their wives and children, thrown to the lions in his place, and commands to all the people of the whole world to “tremble and fear before the God of Daniel”.
