Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is back with a limited run of one-kilo coloured silver coins

It was only a couple of months ago that we looked at a set of ½-ounce coloured silver coins featuring the main characters from the new blockbuster Marvel movie, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but they’re back again in vastly bigger form with this new one-kilo silver coin. Whereas that one was produced by CIT and employed their SmartMinting technology, this one looks to be a product from the Perth Mint judging by the images and the issuing for Tuvalu.

Struck in an ounce of fine 0.999 silver, this chunky beast is as big a popular culture themed coin as you’re liable to find and is billed as the first fully coloured proof silver kilo coin to be released worldwide. The reverse face has a brightly coloured image of the main characters from the movie, with Star-Lord in the centre, surrounded by Drax, Gamorra, Rocket and Baby Groot. Apart from the film logo/name, the main face is clear of inscriptions. The obverse carries the Ian Rank Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II along with all the required inscriptions.

We’re in two minds about this one. The images we have (not helped by some over-intrusive watermarks, we admit) show no signs of relief, so it’s hard to form a definitive opinion at present. It may well be the ‘World’s First Fully Colourized Silver Kilo Coin’, but we’re not sure how desirable that title is as we find colour best when selectively applied for highlighting purposes. If it has good relief and a fine quality colour application, we can see it being a good addition to the market. If it’s just a printed silver disc, we’d be disappointed and questioning the premium.

Packaging looks decent, the monochrome movie poster forming the basis of the design. A slide out tray holds the coin, much like some New Zealand Mint releases. The certificate is pretty cool, styled like an old cassette tape with a hand-written label. Mintage is limited to just 250 pieces, going some way to explaining the price of almost $1,600 USD. Slabbed versions graded 70 are available for another $300 which seems quite a bit extra considering it’s a proof coin that would likely be of 70-grade quality anyway.
