Austrian Mint debuts three coin Vienna Schools of Psychotherapy set with Sigmund Freud

Known for producing short-run gold coin series of exceptional quality, the Austrian Mint has embarked on a new three-coin set of quarter-ounce gold coins to fill the hole left by the award-winning Klimt and His Women five-coin set. Released one  per year, this series is called Vienna Schools of Psychotherapy and each of the three coins looks at one of the major types of psychotherapy to have emerged from the Austro-Hungarian Empire in its heyday, from the late 19th to the early 20th century.

The first coin features the most widely known of all in the field of psychotherapy, Sigmund Freud. The obverse face features a fine portrait of the man based on a photograph taken in 1926 and is surrounded by inscriptions detailing the issuer (REPUBLIK OSTERREICH), denomination (50 EURO) and the date (2017). A great composition, along with a detailed and accurate imagining of the man all contribute to a fine design.

The reverse side illustrates an aspect of a fundamental principle of Freud’s work,  the ‘will to pleasure’ and there are definite signs of the style used for the Klimt series present here. That’s no surprise as Austrian Mint regulars and award-winning designers Mag. Helmut Andexlinger and Herbert Wahner were responsible for this coin and many of the Klimt designs also. This face is refreshingly free of any inscriptions, leaving an attractive piece of art to shine.

Each coin is struck in a ¼oz of 0.986 gold and carries a €50 denomination. Packaged in the mints usual small red box, a collection box for all three coins is also available. Mintage is capped at 20,000 pieces and the coin is available now from the Austrian Mint or from site sponsor Minted-UK. The next two coins will feature Alfred Adler and Viktor Frankl. A great debut to another fine series from the Austrian Mint.

2017 VIENNA SCHOOLS OF PSYCHOTHERAPY: FREUD GOLD COIN

MINTS DESCRIPTION

All born into Jewish families in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Sigmund Freud, Alfred Adler and Viktor Frankl were the founders of the three different Vienna schools of psychotherapy, the scientific discipline established in the Austrian capital in the 20th century. Freud (1856–1939) was the father of psychoanalysis, Adler (1870–1937) founded individual psychology, while Frankl (1905–1997) was the founder of logo therapy, the three pioneering schools of psychotherapy to which this fascinating series is dedicated. The men behind them feature on the obverse of each coin, while the reverse illustrates the core concept of their respective theories. Psychotherapeutic methods and theories have proliferated since the early days, but that might never have happened without the foundations laid by Freud, Adler and Frankl.

Born into a Jewish family on 6 May 1856, in the present-day Czech Republic, Freud, a neurologist, set up his clinical practice in Vienna in 1886. Using a technique called ‘Free association’, in which he encouraged his patients to talk freely without interruption or suggestion, and another known as ‘Transference’, in which patients transfer their feeling from previous relationships onto the relationship with the analyst, Freud made his name as the founder of psychoanalysis, with help from his mentor Josef Breuer (1842-1925). In 1938, Freud and his family fled Vienna for London to escape the Nazis. He died in the British capital in1939, but many terms attributed to Freud, such as ‘Oedipus complex’, ‘super ego’, ‘Freudian slip’ and ‘libido’, live on. The reverse of the coin illustrates the ‘will to pleasure’, a central element in Freud’s work, while a portrait of Freud, based on a photo taken in 1926 by Ferdinand Schmutzer, features on the coin’s obverse.
