A poignant coin with shades of the Ukrainian conflict inspires T&S Coin’s beautiful take on the Guardian Angel

Benevolent spirits, or divine messengers, tasked with watching over an individual throughout their life, and protecting them from harm. Guardian Angels have been the stuff of legend since antiquity. They possibly originated in very early Judaism, but almost all religions have them in their writings, and there was considerable ‘borrowing’ from amongst the many faiths at the time.

Guardian Angels are celestial beings, and the belief is that they’re assigned to an individual by God. They offer guidance, comfort, assistance, and inspiration to their assigned human, and foster a link between the spiritual and material worlds. Despite being fundamentally a religious invention, the idea remains popular with many looking for a guiding hand through life.

The coin is beautiful, depicting a female Guardian Angel, gilded wings extended, protecting two children sitting in the ruins of a communal playground. The artist in charge of design and sculpting is Yuri Tikhonovsky, a Ukrainian based in Kyiv, and it’s clear he’s drawn considerable inspiration from the conflict currently raging through his homeland. The angel is carrying a sword and shield, something also wielded by the country’s patron saint, the Archangel Michael. There are so many little details across this face, with nothing superfluous.

The T&S common obverse returns – a pretty affair, sporting for the first time the coat-of-arms of the Republic of Cameroon, in place of Niue. The coin will come boxed with a certificate of Authenticity. A very attractive design, full of meaning in a world where the average person is continually battered by events around them. The antiqued and gilded combo, in conjunction with high-relief, is always a good start for a modern numismatic, but it needs a talented artist to lift it to the next level. T&S have one.
