The New Zealand Mints ‘Disney Princesses’ series hits seven, this one featuring the amphibian-smooching Tiana. The first coin in this new series had its debut back in January featuring Cinderella, the second coin depicted Aurora, the lead of one of Disney’s most popular movies, Sleeping Beauty, the third the Princess Aurora from The Little Mermaid, the fourth was Princess Belle from Beauty and the Beast, the fifth was Jasmine from Aladdin, and the last to debut was the ultra-iconic Disney character, Snow White. Again, we don’t know how many coins will launch in this series, but Disney isn’t short of princesses, so it may be a while yet.
As before, the two formats being offered are a 1oz coloured proof silver and a ¼oz proof gold. These seem to be the same formats that the New Zealand Mint is sticking with for the Disney coins, matching those used for the six-coin Mickey and Friends set, and the highly regarded ‘Classic Disney’ coins, ‘Steamboat Willie’, Donald Ducks 80th Anniversary and Daisy Ducks 75th Anniversary.
Clearly with the series hitting seven coins this year, there appears to be little shortage of buyers for them, and being aimed more at the gift/Disney memorabilia market than at coin collectors seems to be paying off. The gold coins are actually far nicer in the hand. The silver are standard fare for this format, so common with this mint, along with Perth, who strike them. Available now from the NZ Mints website, although the Perth Mint distribute and sell these in Australia, and dealers worldwide will have them also.
