The next release in the Disney Juggernaut is now upon us and it’s the second coin in the New Zealand Mints ‘Disney Princesses’ series, one showcasing the female stars of some of their most beloved movies. Starting back in January with Cinderella, this second coin depicts the lead of one of Disney’s most popular movies, Sleeping Beauty, a character modelled after iconic screen beauty Audrey Hepburn.

As before, there are two coins being released, a 1oz coloured proof silver and a ¼oz proof gold. These seem to be the two formats that the New Zealand Mint is sticking with for the Disney coins, being the same as those used for the six-coin Mickey and Friends set, and the two ‘Vintage Disney’ coins, ‘Steamboat Willie’ and the Donald Duck 80th Anniversary.

Available from today, the coins will likely be extremely popular with Disney collectors and no doubt the quality will be as high as we’ve come to expect from the New Zealand Mint. With the next Star Trek coins due out soon from the Perth Mint and the next Thunderbirds coin imminent from New Zealand, it’s certainly a great time for movie and tv themed coins. More Disney on the way through 2015 we believe, especially more vintage coins along the lines of the most popular releases to date.

MINTS DESCRIPTION

Living deep in the forest, in a woodcutter’s cottage, Briar-Rose doesn’t know that she is Princess Aurora, and that the evil fairy, Maleficent has cast a dark spell over her. When Aurora pricks her finger on a spindle, she falls into an enchanted sleep. Conquering Maleficent, Prince Phillip awakens the sleeping princess and together they waltz together – just like they did “once upon a dream”.

Did you know?  Sleeping Beauty was based on La Belle au bois dormant by Charles Perrault and Dornröschen by The Brothers Grimm. The film’s musical score featured adaptations of music from the ballet Sleeping Beauty by Tchaikovsky.
