The New Zealand Mints ‘Disney Princesses’ series powers on into its sixth release, this time featuring one of Disney’s most well loved characters, Snow White, although conspicuous by their absence are the seven dwarves. The first coin in this new series had its debut back in January featuring Cinderella, the second coin depicted Aurora, the lead of one of Disney’s most popular movies, Sleeping Beauty, the third the Princess Aurora from The Little Mermaid, the fourth was Princess Belle from Beauty and the Beast and last month saw Jasmine from Aladdin. A seventh coin will likely come as there’s no indication from the mint that this series is done. We’re still a little surprised the NZ Mint didn’t capitalise on Frozen mania with an Elsa coin.

As usual, the two formats being offered are a 1oz coloured proof silver and a ¼oz proof gold. These seem to be the same formats that the New Zealand Mint is sticking with for the Disney coins, matching those used for the six-coin Mickey and Friends set, and the highly regarded ‘Classic Disney’ coins, ‘Steamboat Willie’, Donald Ducks 80th Anniversary and Daisy Ducks 75th Anniversary.

As we’ve said before, these are aimed more at the gift/Disney memorabilia markets than at numismatists, for whom they have greater appeal. Coin collectors are in the middle of a golden age of coin variety, so will look elsewhere for innovation.
