The Matrix returns with a classic high-relief, triple-portrait design from the Mint of Gdańsk

We’ve long waxed lyrical about our love for The Matrix, the genre-busting science-fiction movie created by the Wachowski siblings. It’s had a mixed experience when it comes to the coin world, with a few releases here and there, none pushing any boundaries, but it seems that the Mint of Gdańsk has a licence to produce coins for the franchise now, the first being their recent gold ‘Neo’ coin.

Their second issue is far more impressive, and utilises the popular two-ounce, antique-finished, high-relief silver coin to do so. The image that the mint has chosen is super-iconic, depicting the heads of Trinity, Neo, and Morpheus, the three main characters in the franchise. It’s an image widely associated with The Matrix, but it’s certainly been enhanced for the coin.

The transition from flat image to high-relief metal has been done with extraordinary success. The characters are instantly recognisable, and the antique finish suits it perfectly. There are many different textures struck into the design, from hair to clothing, all looking just right. The famous cascading numbers are present, as is the film logo, with the latter picked out in the green the films are so known for. It’s a small shame that we have to tolerate copyright inscriptions on this face, but the big media companies are notoriously pedantic with this stuff, so no fault of the mints.

The obverse continues with the cascading numbers, with the Ian Rank Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II in the centre (this is a 2022-dated issue). The coin will be presented in a box with a Certificate of Authenticity, and is available to order now. A super release, finally doing justice to one of the greatest sci-fi movies of all time. More, please.
