The Ancient Egyptian themed ‘Gods of Anger’ returns with Osiris, the lord of the dead and the underworld

In Egyptian mythology, Osiris is a prominent deity associated with death, resurrection, and fertility. He is revered as the god of the afterlife and the underworld, as well as the judge of the deceased. Osiris is often depicted as a mummified king with a crook and flail, symbols of authority. He played a central role in the Osiris Myth, a foundational narrative in Egyptian belief. According to the myth, Osiris was the son of Geb (the earth) and Nut (the sky) and had siblings, including his wife and sister, Isis.

Osiris became the ruler of Egypt, bringing prosperity and civilization through agriculture. However, his jealous brother Set coveted the throne and plotted Osiris’s demise. Set tricked Osiris into entering a coffin, which he then sealed and threw into the Nile. Isis, grief-stricken, searched for and found Osiris, but Set discovered the body and dismembered it, scattering the pieces. Isis, with the help of her sister Nephthys and the god Anubis, reassembled Osiris’s body and revived him briefly. Although Osiris couldn’t return to the living world, he became the lord of the afterlife, guiding souls through the journey of death and resurrection.

Osiris is the fourth release in the Gods of Anger series, which returns after a one-year hiatus. One of the many two-ounce, high-relief, antique-finished mythology ranges that have garnered significant popularity over the last decade, this series focuses on the many deities that make up the extensive pantheon from Ancient Egypt, and Osiris follows Anubis in 2019, Horus in 2020, and Sekhmet in 2021.

The god is depicted in classic mummified form, surrounded by animated dead figures. He wears his signature Atef, headwear made from the Hedjet (white crown of Upper Egypt), flanked with a pair of ostrich feathers. The high-relief imparts the design with a good sense of depth, and the gilded crook and flail is a neat focal point. The common obverse returns, and is nicely themed with a border ring of hieroglyphs. The coin is available to order now.
