Numiscollect week wraps up with a look at the latest release in one of the Dutch coin producers biggest series of coins, Biblical Stories. The debut coin, ironically entitled “Creation of the World”, was issued in 2011, and like all the coins in this series, for the island state of Palau. This coin is the ninth to be released and the second in 2015. There were three issues in 2011 and 2014, with one each in 2012 and 2013, all depicting famous stories from the Bible. Previous coins have featured such classic tales as Adam & Eve, Noah’s Ark and Cain & Abel.

All the coins are clean-struck in ½ oz of sterling (0.925) silver and then recieve their signature feature, a coloured enamel highlight. Quite cleverly integrated into the design, previous enamel highlights have included a white enamelled dove, a yellow enamelled shooting star and for this coin, a blue enamelled fish. The customised obverse has remained the same throughout the series, helped by the date of issue of each coin being struck into the unique reverse side artwork each time.

This coin showcases the story of Jonah and the Whale, the epic biblical tale of the man who defied god and was thrown overboard from a ship where he was saved by being swallowed by a great fish. The coin is presented in a box with an enclosed certificate of authenticity. Mintage is strictly limited to just 700 pieces and it will be available from early October.

MINTS DESCRIPTION

A new coin in the biblical stories series is dedicated to Jonah and the Whale. A great issue for Christmas gifts and including a great presentation box.

Jonah or Jonas is the name given in the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh/Old Testament) to a prophet of the northern kingdom of Israel in about the 8th century BC. He is the eponymous central character in the Book of Jonah, famous for being swallowed by a fish or a whale, depending on translation.
