Chinese Gods Mythology series wraps up with a surprise copper-cored behemoth, the Monkey King

Over the last couple of months we’ve seen the release of some fine silver coins from Precious Metal Collectors and The Treasurists, using a new format with a lot of potential. A big coin needs a lot of metal, which as we’re dealing with precious metal, adds a lot of cost. The clever answer to the conundrum is to wrap a smaller amount of precious metal around a base metal core. in this case, and with most of the previous issues, we’re talking about 2oz of silver struck around a huge 11.5oz’s of copper.

The coin we’re looking at here is the third and final issue in the Chinese Gods Mythology series, which is surprising given the first two issues, Erlang Shen and Sun Wukong, were standard 2oz silver coins. A very cool design takes the two previous protagonists and merges them into a single piece, split down the middle by a gilded Monkey King statue. As you’d expect given the way these are made, it’s packed with ultra high relief detail. That high relief extends to the obverse, which is a nicely decorated design with the ubiquitous effigy of Queen Elizabeth II at its centre.

This is a coin in the ‘Order of the Spectres’ range, so the Certificate of Authenticity will be serialised with a number starting from that reached by the previous release. A little confusing perhaps, but a novel way to tie different releases by a design group together. Packaging will no doubt be top quality, as they’ve made a point of it on other issues by this group. The mintage remains at the 500 we’ve seen before – a number increasingly popular these days. Distributed by Precious Metal Collectors on behalf of The Treasurist, this striking coin is available to pre-order now.

MINTS DESCRIPTION

The Chinese Gods Mythology Series brings to life the battle of mythical characters from popular Chinese novel, Journey to The West. The third and final coin in the series features Monkey King going face to face with Erlang God in a heavenly battle. After destroying Mother Queens peach party and 100,000 heavenly soldiers to capture him, but Wukong defeated them all. The God Erlang was then sent to fight Wukong to capture him.

The 2 oz fine-silver coin is struck in a new minting technique called “Bi-Metal Plus”, that combines 11.5 oz of copper in between two layers of fine-silver resulting in super ultra high relief while being topped off with silver antique finishing. The design on the reverse features Monkey King and Erlang God going head to head in their battle in the heaven with a Monkey King statue in the middle gilded in Gold separating the two characters apart.

The collectible coin will come together with the Certificate of Authenticity which its serial number will continue to run from the previous series, along with a themed box specially designed for by Order of the Spectres.
