Star Wars Ships coin series continues with the iconic X-Wing Rebel Alliance starfighter

A 2017 debuted series of Star Wars coins from the New Zealand Mint, Star Wars Ships looks at some of the incredibly iconic vessels to enter the realm of popular culture from these hugely popular movies. Two coins have been released so far this year, the first showcasing the legendary Millennium Falcon and the second changing sides with the monstrously sized Imperial Star Destroyer.

For this third coin we’re back with the Rebels and on a far smaller scale with the much loved X-Wing starfighter. Depicting the ship in blueprint form as before, these are relatively simple designs but accomplish what they set out to do pretty well. The designs are clean and free of excess inscriptions other than the ship name. The composition and copyright text is kept very small and out of the way.

The obverse is the standard Ian Rank Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Packaging is very good quality, none of the gimmickry present in some of the mints previous output. Struck in one-ounce of fine 0.999 silver version, there is no gold version, something we’d consider a pointless addition anyway.

Not our favourite Star Wars series, that remains the Classic run, these are seemingly popular and no doubt aimed at the movie memorabilia market. Selling for $80.00 USD and with a 10,000 mintage, the coin is available to order today with shipping shortly after. One for the fan we think and they’ll be pleased to know there are more to come this year, the designs we’ve seen fitting in well with the first three coins. Many of our sponsors sell these so go click on an ad if you want one.

2017 STAR WARS SHIPS T-65 X-WING SILVER COIN

MINTS DESCRIPTION

Designed and built by Incom Corporation, the T-65 X-wing starfighter was a highly distinctive dogfighter with S-foils that resembled an ‘X’ when in attack formation. Descended from Clone Wars-era starfighters, the T-65 were heavily armed with each wing containing a laser cannon.

Originally intended for the Imperial Navy, political forces led to the Galactic Empire equipping with Sienar Fleet Systems’ more affordable but less capable TIE fighter series. The Alliance adopted the design instead for its fight against the Empire.

The X-Wing was hugely successful and fought at many of the pivotal battles of the Rebellion, including assaults on both Death Stars and the Evacuation of Hoth. It was developed with several variants and successors, including the T70 and T85.
