Deadly & Dangerous Red Back Spider 20th Anniversary gold & silver coins (2026 Downies)

Well here’s a real blast from the past! Back in 2006, the Perth Mint launched the first Deadly & Dangerous coin, and it was an instant hit, gaining popularity and acclaim in equal measure. Since then, and despite the odds as so few series hit the two-decade milestone, it’s continued on to this day, with the 2026 Giant Centipede coin launching earlier this year. As it’s such a big milestone, we’re also being treated to a special re-issue of the 2006 coin, one we still feel is the best in the series.
The Red Back Spider is an unfairly maligned creature, nowhere near as deadly as you’ve been made to believe, but its distinctive appearance has given it a notoriety of its own. Trust me when I say, you’d rather encounter five of these than a single Sydney Funnel Web Spider… The coin also has a distinctive appearance, and aside from the addition of a small 20th anniversary privy mark, is basically unchanged from the 2006 release, although King Charles II now adorns the obverse.
The main addition is the one-ounce gold variant, which wasn’t offered in 2006, with gold coins only joining the Deadly & dangerous line-up in 2021. It only has a mintage of 99 pieces, with the silver at 2,006 to match the debut year. It’s available to order now. Check out the whole range dating back twenty years in our Coin Series Profile.
