Part of their extensive reimagining of the history and mythology of the ancient lands of the Germanic peoples, Germania Beasts was a bi-annual look at some of the greatest creatures from the legends of the region. We say ‘was’, because the 2026 coin is to be the last in the range, following the 2020 Fafnir, the 2022 Fenrir, and the 2025 Gullinbursti previously issued. The standout feature of this series has always been its use of both faces to create a single coherent image.

The technique is simple enough. The front half of the creature is shown on the reverse side of the coin, with the back half shown on the obverse. It still allows for a good-looking main face, but an even better one when two coins are placed next to each other. The most affordable way to do this is via the base bullion variant, with its 25,000 coin mintage, and an optional dual-coin capsule specifically made to show them off perfectly.

While it’s a shame to see this series come to its conclusion, I’m pleased to see that, in my opinion of course, Germania Mint have kept the best until last, as this is a quite superb example of the concept. The horse is beautifully realised by Natalia Danysz, and a real credit to her. It can’t be easy to picture an eight-legged horse, but Odin’s steed, the result of Loki shagging a horse, apparently (mythology is W.E.I.R.D…), has been done full justice here.

The other, fancier versions can be seen below as well, and all are available to order now. A fitting end to a unique series.

Geminus is the fancy version of the base bullion coin, and unlike the others, is sold as a pair in a custom double-capsule. Each of the two coins has a different finish on each face. The first coin has a gilded Sleipnir front on a ruthenium background on the reverse face, with a ruthenium Sleipnir back on a gilded background on the obverse face. The second coin has a mirror of those finishes on it.

The reasoning for this becomes clear when the coins are placed in the double-capsule. The reverse of coin one, and the obverse of coin two, make a matching, complete image of the whole animal. The obverse of coin one, and the reverse of coin two, also do that, but with the alternate finish. It’s a technique that Germania Mint have used for many years now, and is extremely effective.

Geminus is a fine variant, different enough from the base bullion coins, and the best way to see the whole two-coin spread of the full Sleipnir imagery. The finishes offer an excellent level of contrast, and it should display well in the packaging. Availability on this version is limited to just 500 sets.

The final version looks the best in my eyes, and is a solitary two-ounce coin with good levels of high relief on both faces. That clean background works especially well here, allowing Sleipnir to really stand out unencumbered. The relief really does raise this variant above the others, and the musculature stands out particularly well, a testament to the original design.

There are numerous finishes utilised on this one, with a black ruthenium background field, and an antiqued horse enhanced with gilding and more ruthenium. The horse hair has a UV colour application that you can see well in the video.

The presentation is still first-class, with a themed acrylic block sat in a wooden base. It sounds simple, but we’ve got a few similar ones here, and they really are very cool indeed. The mintage is capped at 999 pieces. About the only downside of this version is you’re unlikely to have two of them to show off the full image of Sleipnir.
