The arcane mysteries of the Tarot mark Pop Coin’s first range to embrace the blind box concept. Will you be lucky?
For over 600 years, a pack of cards called The Tarot, have been used to play games across parts of Europe, beginning in 1430s Italy, and spreading through Europe from there. In 18th century France, the cards captured the attention of occultists, and from there, the Tarot deck took on two distinct forms. Today, most interest in the cards is centred around their occult use in divining the future, and that uses a deck of 78 cards. Of those, 56 are divided up into four suits that we all know, with each composed of the ten numbered cards, a King, a Queen, a Knight, and a Jack. In Tarot, these are the Minor Arcana, with the remaining 22 cards called the Major Arcana.
Pop Coin’s new series will feature the Major Arcana, and the first three of them have been released together. We have The Fool, The Magician, and The Lovers. Each have meanings within the tarot system, much like astrology does, and combinations of cards are meant to answer questions you have, usually about your future, for example. Like astrology, it’s all quite ridiculous, of course, but it’s become a part of our culture, and there’s nothing wrong with a bit of imagination in lfe.
The coins are sold in blind boxes, a concept becoming more popular over the last couple of years in numismatics. In this case, it isn’t about the coin you get, as you’re able to purchase which design you want, but about what finish. Each design comes in a proof finish, or a hologram enhanced finish, or one that is gilded with a hologram finish. They differ in rarity, with 135 of the former, 15 of the holo, and just 6 of the gilded. Basically, you can buy a sealed The Fool pack, for example, and it will have one of those three finishes within.
The packaging consists of a fully sealed black bag, inside which is a boxed and certified coin. This way, you won’t have any idea which finish you have until it’s opened, hence the ‘blind box’. With Pop Coin’s usual miniscule mintage, these coins remain a rarity in themselves, but the holo coins are scarce even by those standards. If Tarot is a thing for you, these seem an obvious way to see if they predict luck in your future 😉
