Scottsdale launch chunky silver bullion coin for Congo featuring the Water Buffalo
Scottsdale Mint have expanded their range of big silver bullion coins with the launch of a new one issued for the Democratic Republic of Congo. Much like their other Egyptian themed series, these are chunky coins with multi-ounce weights.
Struck in 100g of fine 0.999 silver, just over three ounces, the design depicts the water buffalo, a big beast in its own right living in huge numbers across Asia. A half portrait of the animal looking straight ahead and with a stern expression on its face dominates the reverse of the coin. A smaller silhouette of a buffalo is placed in the background. Inscriptions bearing the coins composition and title are present here. The face has a concave strike, which along with the detailed design, makes this a good looking coin.
The obverse features the emblem of the Democratic Republic of Congo and makes a good match for the coin theme. The issuer, date and denomination are inscribed on this face. The background is textured to look like a pebbled river bed, another nice touch.
Sold singly or in tubes of seven coins, this is an interesting piece and if the premiums are reasonable, a good way to get some nice looking silver bullion. Available to order shortly with coins shipping later next week.

The picture is a cape buffalo, not a water buffalo. Water buffalo are in SE Asia, not Africa
i thought that as well on release, but I did a little digging and the image is a decent representation of a wild water buffalo from Assam in Northern India, for example. There seems to be more diversity in this species than in the African Cape Buffalo and we usually picture the water buffalo like the domesticated animal similar to that in the featured image I used at top. I agree, it looks more like we imagine the Cape Buffalo to look though.
Does anyone know of coin holders or storage options for these chunky coins? Been looking around and have come up empty handed… Thanks!
I am wondering why it is legal tender of only 50 CFA? The conversion to US dollar is only $0.09. That doesn’t make sense for over 3 oz of silver.
That’s standard practice for virtually all modern commemorative coins. The value is a token to ensure its status as legal tender, but it isn’t designed to be spent. The Royal Mint have gold kilo coins denominated at just £800 for example, despite containing well over £30,000 worth of gold. It’s just a symbolic amount.
