No mint has invested more time and expertise in the popularising of mini gold coins than collector favourite, Coin Invest Trust (CIT). Mini gold coins are those that come in at under one gram in weight, most commonly 0.5g. Nobody would ever consider them a way to stack gold at a bargain price, that’s what 1/10 oz gold bullion coins are for, so these are meant totally for the collectors coin market and allow people to collect gold commemoratives at affordable prices. CIT have been issuing this format for many years now, but recently some of the big names like the Perth Mint have jumped into the game, with their own latest release being a version of the beautiful Mercanti-designed Wedge-tailed Eagle. Treasures of Oz have been the producer that’ve come closest to CIT in their commitment to the format, with versions of their lunar coins and derivatives, and their fish series of silver bullion coins.

What distinguishes CIT from the others is the multitude of truly unique designs they issue, whereas most others just issue versions of existing, larger coins. These latest three coins are a perfect case in point, all carrying artwork quite intricate for their 11mm diameter. Each has a historical theme, our favourite by far being the super little Magna Carta coin that we’d love ourselves. Previous coins have been priced in the €40-€50 range at retail, so eminently affordable if not great value in an outright metal content sense. When a coin is as small as this, the biggest cost isn’t the metal, but the design and production, so we think they’re well priced for what they are. Available soon at the usual dealers, if you’re struggling to track down these little CIT gems, then Numiscollect.eu usually stocks them at good prices.

On another note, we’re quite disappointed in the lack of Magna Carta coins being issued. Apart from this and a nice design from the Royal Mint, there’s very little coming out. We feel it’s something the United States Mint in particular should have commemorated given the percieved links to the US Constitution. I don’t think I’m alone in hoping that the US Mint will be given more freedom from the government to do their own thing in the future.

800 YEARS SINCE MAGNA CARTA

The Magna Carta is undoubtedly one of the world’s most famous documents. In 1215 AD, a reluctant John Lackland, who was then the king of England, agreed to what is now considered to be the first written constitution in European history and a landmark in the evolution of human rights.

In order to enforce the charter throughout the entire kingdom, at least 13 original copies of the document were issued under the royal seal. To this day, only 4 of these remain; 2 copies are owned by the British Library and one copy each by Salisbury Cathedral and Lincoln Cathedral.

150 YEARS SINCE LINCOLNS DEATH

Although born to poor circumstances, Abraham Lincoln is one of the greatest heroes in American history. Self-taught, he ventured into politics at a young age and was elected 16th president of the United States of America in 1860. Even then, due to different views on slavery, the terrible American Civil War was already looming.

Shortly after the beginning of his second term of office, Abraham Lincoln was shot dead by the actor and confederate fanatic John Wilkes Booth in 1865. His political legacy was fulfilled shortly after his death: The abolition of slavery was incorporated in the US-Constitution and the Southern States were integrated into the Union again.

70 YEARS OF EUROPEAN PEACE

The Second World War is considered the most momentous war in the history of mankind. Many countries and all great powers of the 20th century were involved and over 50 million lives were lost, of which more than half were civilians.

The global war left deep scars such as permanent physical damage and unbearable trauma. The 70th anniversary of the end of World War II 2015 should tell and remind mankind of the indescribable grief it caused.
