Ghostbusters is back with Slimer, the second of three silver coins celebrating the cult movie
The second of three coins celebrating the iconic comedy movie Ghostbusters, this follows on from the crew coin featured last month and comes before the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man that will round out the set next month. It’s a brilliant movie that certainly warrants numismatic recognition, just a shame that reboot movie from last year bombed (to be honest, it did suck…).
The standard Perth Mint commemorative format is employed again, a 40.6 mm, one-ounce, fine-silver coin with colour applied to the reverse face. The design is a depiction of the popular Slimer being pulled into one of the Ghostbusters traps and is certainly bright and colourful. The obverse is a standard Tuvalu design from the Perth Mint, descriptive inscriptions surrounding the Ian Rank Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.
Packaging is very well themed and comes with a serialised certificate of authenticity. A coin the movie buff will appreciate we’re sure, but another franchise coin in the standard format is disappointing, lacking the spark that would lift it above the norm. Released in 1984, Ghostbusters is an American supernatural comedy film that follows the story of three doctors working in the Paranormal Studies Department of Columbia University in New York. After being fired for their unreliable and suspect findings, research, and methods, the three decide to start their own business specialising in paranormal investigations and eliminations known as ‘Ghostbusters’. Slimer was the first ghost captured by the Ghostbusters. Slimer was made up of ectoplasm and lived on the twelfth floor of the Sedgewick Hotel. A rotund, green blob prone to eating everything in sight, he leaves a trail of slime in his wake.
Ghostbusters was a critical and commercial success and launched a popular media franchise which includes a sequel released in 1989 called Ghostbusters II. Struck by The Perth Mint from 1oz of 99.99% pure silver, the coin is issued as legal tender under the authority of the Government of Tuvalu. No more than 5,000 of the GhostbustersTM Slimer 2017 1oz Silver Coin will be released.
DESIGN: The reverse of the coin depicts Slimer being pulled into a ghost trap as he appeared in GhostbustersTM. The design also includes the inscription GHOSTBUSTERS. The design also includes the ‘no ghost’ icon and the inscription GHOSTBUSTERS. The coin’s obverse depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the 2017-year date, and the monetary denomination.
PACKAGING: Each coin is presented in a black and green themed display case featuring the words ‘WHO YA GONNA CALL?’ on the outside of the case, within a themed shipper, and is accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
