I don’t think many would argue that Australian hard rock band AC/DC aren’t one of the all-time greats. Formed in 1973, they continue to perform to this day, although over that long time, they have had different performers in their line-ups. One of the most beloved was lead singer Bon Scott, who performed on AC/DC’s first seven studio albums. He died in 1980 from acute alcohol poisoning, leading the band to consider disbanding, but Scott’s parents wanted them to continue, and they hired Brian Johnson as their new vocalist.

The next album was a tribute to him, and was called Back in Black. It remains the second best-selling album of all time, beaten only by Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Scott’s grave has been designated a cultural landmark by the National Trust of Australia, and is the countries most visited grave. He was rated number one in Classic Rock magazines ‘100 Greatest Frontmen’. AC/DC continue to perform.

To mark what would have been Scott’s 80th birthday, the Perth Mint have released a pair of relatively affordable minted bars. The silver bar weighs in at ten grams, with the gold at one gram. Both carry the same design, which is basically the Bon Scott crest of a lion rampant holding a microphone. Love that! The inscription ‘BON SCOTT 80 YEARS’, finishes off a simple look. The back carries the inscribed composition and that pretty Perth Mint swan logo.

The bars are packaging in those neat credit-card style blisterpacks (with removable capsules), all themed with the Scott family tartan, and with the COA on the back. That is then placed in a themed sleeve, fronted with a 1979 ‘Polaroid-style’ image of Bon Scott doing what he was famous for. A nice, affordable memorial to one of Rock’s legendary figures.
