Who you gonna call? The Perth Mint if you want a proof silver Ghostbusters coin…

There’s never been a time when popular culture has emblazoned itself across so many precious metal coins as it has right now. From the obvious targets like Star Wars, Star Trek and Disney, right throught to smaller properties that are just marking anniversaries or popularity, the choice is wide and deep. New up from the Perth Mint is a coin that occupies the latter group of releases, and this time it’s the cult movie Ghostbusters.

One of the most loved comedies of all time, Ghostbusters was released in 1984 to widespread acclaim, grossing well over $500m worldwide. Starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, it was a funny, lively supernatural comedy about three eccentric parapsychologists who start a ghost-catching business in New York City. Replete with a catchy soundtrack, decent special effects and a fine supporting cast, the movie spawned a sequel in 1989 and a reimaging in 2016 (which they really shouldn’t have bothered with…).

The coin is the first of three to be released by the Perth Mint and depicts the crew of three in action, with the iconic Ghostbusters logo and the skyscrapers of New York City in the background, only the latter element uncoloured. Designed by Perth Mint regular artist Tom Vaughan, it’s a busy design that captures the frentic nature of the movie very well. The obverse is a standard Tuvalu design from this mint, just descriptive inscriptions around the Ian Rank Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.

Packaging is heavily themed and the one-ounce 0.999 silver coin comes with a serialised certificate of authenticity. All in all, a coin that Ghostbusters fans will probably enjoy and the quality is likely to be high given the format is a speciality of this mint. Two more coins will follow, one featuring Slimer and another the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, both hugely popular characters from the franchise. Released in 1984, Ghostbusters is an American supernatural comedy film that follows the story of three doctors working in the Paranormal Studies Department of Columbia University in New York. After being fired for their unreliable and suspect findings, research, and methods, the three decide to start their own business specialising in paranormal investigations and eliminations known as ‘Ghostbusters’.Together, Dr Ray Stantz, Dr Peter Venkman, and Dr Egon Spengler set up shop in an abandoned firehouse in New York City. They eventually stumble upon a gateway to another dimension which will wreak havoc on the metropolis, and so they set about attempting to save Manhattan from mass destruction.

Ghostbusters was a critical and commercial success and launched a popular media franchise which includes a sequel released in 1989 called Ghostbusters II. Struck by The Perth Mint from 1oz of 99.99% pure silver, the coin is issued as legal tender under the authority of the Government of Tuvalu. No more than 5,000 of the GhostbustersTM Crew 2017 1oz Silver Coin will be released.

DESIGN: The reverse of the coin depicts Dr Spengler, Dr Stantz, and Dr Venkman as they appeared in Ghostbusters, against a backdrop of New York City and a green coloured sky. The design also includes the ‘no ghost’ icon and the inscription GHOSTBUSTERS. The coin’s obverse depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the 2017-year date, and the monetary denomination.

PACKAGING: Each coin is presented in a black and green themed display case featuring the words ‘WHO YA GONNA CALL?’ on the outside of the case, within a themed shipper, and is accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
