You don’t have to take magic mushrooms to see the ones on Mint of MKs latest silver coin issue glow when the lights go out…

Who hasn’t heard of shrooms? Magic mushrooms have been an ever-present part of the popular culture movement since the 1960s, but their actual use goes back further – far, far, further. There is rock art in Algeria, at Tassili n’Ajjer National Park, that dates back around 10,000 years, that is believed to show the usage of this funky fungi, and there are numerous references to it throughout history.

Today, psilocybin, the active compound in the mushrooms, is enjoying a renaissance, with its effects on depression and mental health indicating impressive potential benefits. The publication of research papers looking at the substance have increased almost seven-fold since the 90s, and the global psychedelic drugs market is projected to hit almost $11 billion annually over the next three years.

It seems an unlikely subject for a collectible coin, but the Mint of MK likes to experiment, so here we are. This producer is quite prolific, and we obviously can’t cover more than a fraction of any mints releases, but I feel compelled to highlight something as quirky and original as this coin, especially when it’s done as well as it is here.

The reverse face features three mushrooms, the biggest one expertly defining the edge of the coin for a third of its circumference. It’s all replete with texture and high-relief, and when the lights go out, there’s a sprinkling of UV colour. The obverse is particularly inventive, featuring a mass of naked people intertwined, reaching out, and subject to the force of a psychic vortex behind them. This vortex also glows under UV light.

I have to say that I love this one. It’s all very coherent, and the contrast between the natural reverse, and the psychedelic obverse is very well-balanced. Originality scores big here, and this has it. It’s all boxed with a Certificate of Authenticity, and only 199 pieces of this two-ounce silver coin will be minted. Available to order now.
