It’s 80 years since the biggest war in human history ended. The East India Company marks the momentous anniversary

On the 8th of May 2025, the world celebrates the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, On this day in 1945, Nazi Germany unconditionally surrendered to the Allies, bringing to an end the war in the European theatre. The fight against Japan would continue for several more months, but all together, it was clear the most destructive war in human history was coming to an end.

We’re expecting to see quite a few coins issued to mark this anniversary, as it’s something particularly suited to numismatics, but one of the first off the starting blocks is the East India Company, a producer with a traditional style of coin design well suited to this kind of subject, and an impressive history of it.

The design is centred around an angel with her arms lifted to form a V, the symbol for victory. Behind and above her, is a large ‘V’, and below, a ribbon inscribed with the dates. The coin’s title is inscribed around the lower rim. The coin is issued for St Helena, a remote British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic, and as such, carries the effigy of King Charles III on the obverse. It’s a neat, very traditional take on a pivotal historical event.

The range is quite expansive, with 1oz and 5oz silver coins being the only variants with a denominated value. The reason for that is all the other types are sovereigns, which typically come without a value attached to them. This range consists of a pair of platinum coins, a full sovereign, and a five-sovereign. The 22-kt gold coins are available in quarter, half, full, double, and five-sovereign weights, although the biggest and smallest of those are only offered in sets, which we lay out further down. Available now, they ship from 5th May, just in time for the anniversary date.

MINT’S DESCRIPTION

VE Day, or Victory in Europe Day, marks one of the most significant moments in modern history—the end of the Second World War in Europe. On May 8, 1945, the German armed forces signed an unconditional surrender, bringing an end to nearly six years of war on the European front. This momentous occasion was celebrated by the Allied nations, including Great Britain, the United States, the Soviet Union, Canada, Australia, and many others who had fought together against the Axis powers.

As news of the surrender spread, celebrations erupted across cities and towns throughout the Allied world. In the United Kingdom, more than a million people flooded the streets to rejoice in the long-awaited victory. Streets were filled with music, dancing, and waving flags. In London, vast crowds gathered in Trafalgar Square and along The Mall, leading up to Buckingham Palace. There, the public was greeted by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, along with their daughters, including the future Queen Elizabeth II, and Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who addressed the cheering crowds from the palace balcony.

VE Day was not just a time for national celebration—it was also a moment of reflection, gratitude, and remembrance for the countless lives lost and the sacrifices made. The joy of victory was tempered by the memory of the war’s toll. Nonetheless, May 8, 1945, stands as a powerful symbol of hope, unity, and the triumph of peace over tyranny. To this day, VE Day remains a time to honour the bravery of those who served and to remember the resilience of the nations that stood together in the face of unimaginable adversity.

THE GOLD SETS

As well as the three sovereign sizes sold individually, there are three sets which include some of them, along with the addition of two other weights. Those are a smaller quarter-sovereign (2 grams), and a five-sovereign (40 grams), both also in 0.9167 fineness. That makes up what is traditionally the main sovereign line-up issued by The Royal Mint.

The three-coin set focuses on the smallest coins in the range (quarter, half, full), has a mintage of 199, and costs £1,495.00. The four-coin set adds the double-sovereign, has an issue limit of 99 sets, and costs £3,195.00. Finally, and adding a five-sovereign to the mix, the five-coin set, of which only 50 will be offered, comes in at a heady £6,245.00.
