Agoro continues the trading coin concept with Harry Potters ‘Wizarding World’ taking up the reins after Star Wars, Marvel and DC

The New Zealand Mint, now called Agoro, debuted their .mint Trading Coins concept with Star Wars back in August 2023, with a 51-coin Star Wars release. The concept is simple enough, taking the age-old swapping idea from baseball and bubblegum cards, and applying it to silver coins. They were a huge hit, despite our own misgivings, and it was rapidly followed up with a similar Marvel Comics set, and then a DC Comics one.

As before, this is a set of 51 coins, 50 of which are one-ounce silver, with one a quarter-ounce gold. They’re sold in a sealed black box which contains two coins. However, the contents are a mystery, being randomly placed, so you will get no choice of design. The silver coins are divided into five lots of ten, with mintages varying. The five levels are ‘Limited’ (250 mintage per design), ‘Uncommon’ (150), ‘Scarce’ (50), ‘Rare’ (30), and ‘Ultra-Rare’ (20). The last level, ‘Mythic’ is the gold coin, with just 10 of those mixed in.

If you wanted to get a particular subset, for example, it’s inevitable that you’ll be scouring the secondary market for them, and paying a hefty premium for the privilege. Even the 250 mintage coins have sold for ridiculous premiums, so you can imagine what the rarer coins go for. We’d be extremely surprised if more than one or two full sets are ever compiled by anyone. To be fair, if you understand this and are happy to ‘play the game’, then you will get a couple of relatively rare coins for a theme you presumably like. The imagery is on point, and the range varied. You also might get lucky, of course, but if you don’t, you’re fair game for the price scalpers, sadly.

There’s a good selection of characters here, and the most popular characters are in the most common categories, which is a nice touch, unless you prefer the baddies… They’re all a little unexciting compared to the previous ranges, simply because Harry Potter isn’t as extravagant visually as Star Wars, for example, but the fanbase seems to be as strong, regardless. A look through does make you realise just how many big movie stars have appeared in the franchise. Neatly packaged, the price per pair has risen to $349 USD, but given the rise in the silver price, that’s not unusual, or unexpected.
