Powercoin launches a clever paper airplane shaped coin. Just don’t throw it at someone!

Continuing their penchant for very unusually shaped coins, and following such designs as The Unbreakable Phone, and the Calculator Watch, Powercoin have just debuted the first in their ‘Folded Dreams’ series, one that, certainly on the evidence of this first issue, will be a bit more esoteric than most. We’re all familiar with the paper folding art of Origami, but it’s the popular practice of turning waste sheets of paper into airplanes, that is the subject of this new two-ounce silver coin.

The shape is extraordinary, aping the look of a paper dart plane to a remarkable degree. Clever little touches abound, like the fold on top that extends down into the ‘V’, and the crinkled nose that adorns every actual paper plane after it’s been thrown for the first time. It’s a superb, fun rendition. We’re not keen on the font used for the inscriptions, or their placement, but that’s a minor quibble in the grand scheme of things. The placement of the two circles, hinting at the roundels used on actual aircraft by many air forces, is neat, however.

The coin is a good size at 90 mm in length, and with its light antique finish, looks superb overall. It comes boxed, and with a Certificate of Authenticity, and everything is nicely themed. A fun debut, it will certainly be interesting to see where Powercoin take this series next, and we for one, will be watching. Available now, it has a mintage of 499 units.
