The New Zealand Mint has been busy this month. Here’s a catch-up of their September pop-culture releases

It’s been a while since we did a round-up of New Zealand mint coins, so here we have the latest September issues. Moving forward, we’ll get back to a more usual routine with them. There are plenty of the old favourites here, like Chibi, Star Wars helmets, Marvel and DC, but a few surprises as well. Magic the Gathering is one for the fans, but The Exorcist and The Shawshank Redemption, will have wider appeal.

A good selection, with something for most tastes and pockets, as long as the pop-culture world is for you. Next month sees a pretty cool The Nightmare Before Christmas shaped coin, more Chibi (of course!), a new Wild West release in a rare foray away from pop-culture, and a Captain America silver miniature.

WARNER BROTHERS 100: THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION

A neat range of coins celebrating 100 years of Warner Brothers Studios, the poster art has done a great job to date, encapsulating classic films, like Enter the Dragon, and Cool Hand Luke. The widely regarded film, The Shawshank Redemption, is the subject of this fifth issue, and it looks to be another good one.

The black coloured, and frosted figures sit over a mirrored background, and we suspect the coin in hand will be considerably more striking than these images show. Packaging is attractive, the coin is a good size, and the mintage is a tiny 100 units.

THE EXORCIST 50TH ANNIVERSARY

One of the all-time great horror movies, and an enfant terrible of the early VHS days, The Exorcist tells the story of demonic possession, in what was for the time, a shockingly visual way (you see worse in a cartoon these days…). It’s now half a century old, and what better way to celebrate than a coin rocking one of the best movie poster’s of all time?

The poster image is the work of legendary photographer Bill Gold, a man responsible for hundreds of them, from Yankee Doodle Dandy in 1942, to J. Edgar in 2011. It’s almost impossible to summarise the body of work, but everyone is likely aware of some of them, especially if you’re a Clint Eastwood fan. You may have guessed, by now, that we love this one.

BATMAN DAY

Batman Day is apparently a thing, but then we have days, weeks or months for just about everything these days, so why not a fictional crime-fighter that dresses like a bat, and fights a psychotic clown. Struck using the same format as the mint’s poster coins, we have to confess to liking the artwork here, very much in the modern comic-book style, The antique-finish suits the character well.

BO-KATAN KRYZE GAUNTLET STARFIGHTER

The fourth in a range of antique-finished, shaped coins highlighting some of the smaller vessels in the Star Wars franchise, A ship from The Mandalorian television series is the star here, specifically the Gauntlet Starfighter of the female Mandalorian, Bo-Katan Kryze. As with prior issues, there’s plenty of detail on the reverse face, but little elsewhere, with the edge carrying none at all.

There are one-ounce, and three-ounce variants, with the bigger sibling just being bigger, with little in the way of enhanced detail. We like the look of that reverse face, but the whole coin could be enhanced with a little more ambition.

BLACK PANTHER

The third in what we’ve tagged as the mint’s ‘Classic’ version of the Marvel Universe, Black Panther follows Thor and Captain America. These are simpler coins, and all the better for it, in our opinion. The silver variants have a wider view of the character, while the gold coins have a cropped version of it. In addition, the silver coins have a coloured logo on them.

THE AVENGERS 60TH ANNIVERSARY: HULK, IRON MAN

The last two in this series of seven wedge-shaped coins is a celebration of sixty years since the biggest team in comics had their debut – The Avengers. Each of the issues showcases one of the characters in their original 1960s form, and it’s good to them in this form after a decade of Hollywood stamping its vision on them.

Each of them tips the scales at a troy ounce of silver, and each comes boxed in individually themed packaging. However, buyers of the Captain America coin will get a free, circular collectors box which will hold all seven coins.

HAN SOLO (3oz)

The fifth (if you count both Vader coins as part of it) in this series of three-ounce Star Wars character coins, they feature a mixed coloured, and engraved set of images showcasing their adventures through the various films in the franchise. Han Solo has been one of the longest running of them all, so it’s a good selection. One of the bigger Star Wars coins on offer, so one for the hardcore fan, perhaps.

MAGIC THE GATHERING 30TH ANNIVERSARY

A genuine gaming phenomenon, Magic the Gathering is a collectible card game, with thousands of different cards, allowing players to build up highly customisable decks to play with. Some of the cards, like the infamous Black Lotus, are hugely valuable, sometimes breaking the $500k mark at auction.

Now 30 years on, the NZ Mint has issued a silver coin to mark the anniversary of its release. It’s one of those designs that will have meaning to fans, and be meaningless to others, so one that is tightly targeted at a niche audience. The mintage marks the year of release of the original game.

Each of them tips the scales at a troy ounce of silver, and each comes boxed in individually themed packaging. However, buyers of the Captain America coin will get a free, circular collectors box which will hold all seven coins. No doubt this will be popular, and you can look forward to the last four issues over the next couple of months. Captain Marvel and Black Widow are next.

CHIBI: QUI-GON, CAPTAIN AMERICA, LUNAR DRAGON

COLOUREDGILDED

More Chibi, this time one for the Star Wars subset, one for the newish Marvel subset, and a rare foray outside the franchised licence market, with a lunar dragon. The lunar Chibi is a little odd, but the others are well aimed at their respective audiences. Don’t forget to check out our huge Chibi Coin Series Profile, where we’ve collected all the issues in the behemoth of a range.

THE MANDALORIAN HELMET: BO-KATAN KRYZE

A long-running range of coins, starting with Faces of the Empire, passing through Faces of the First Order, and now, onto The Mandalorian Helmets. This will be the 19th so far, although only the third Mandalorian offering. They’re basically a cartoonish representation of the various pieces of headgear worn by the factions in the Star Wars universe. We’ve yet to see a Rebel Alliance release yet, but suspect it’s coming.

Uncomplicated shaped coins, they nevertheless do a bold job of showing off the subject, and given the number of them issued over the last couple of years, a very popular one.

COMIX: DETECTIVE COMICS #27 (2oz)

It was only a short while ago that we reported on a one-ounce silver coin in the mint’s Comix range, featuring Detective Comics #27, the first appearance of perhaps the most iconic superhero of them all, Batman. We also noted that we’d seen this cover several times before, most notably in silver foil form, so it’s with some amazement that we’re here again.

This release is a two-ounce version, although lacking the effects to the edge that mark out the smaller coins so uniquely. Honestly, we really don’t understand the point of it. The cover has been done to death in multiple formats already, and this lacks even the neat edge touches of the one-ounce coin. Forgettable, and sadly, we have a Star Wars and Marvel release next month in the same vein.

EVERGREEN THOR

This is a bit more like it. Thor returns in a strictly comic-book inspired issue as part of a ‘Marvel Evergreen’ collection. The art is good, the coin reverse is free of intrusive inscriptions, and the packaging is neat. For the Marvel fan, there’s little to complain about here.
