Superman joins the Mint of Gdansk’s licenced pop-culture coin range, with a new two-ounce, high-relief depiction of the Man of Steel
We’ve seen, and covered, quite a few Superman coins over the last decade, as the iconic superhero remains immensely popular across multiple forms of media, from comics, of course, to film and television. The Mint of Gdańsk has joined the fray with a new issue of their own, utilising some of the higher-end minting techniques they’re known for.
The two-ounce, antiqued, high-relief format is always a good balance between having enough metal to pull off great relief, but remaining relatively affordable, and this Polish producer has a fine history of impressive coins using it, including such genre gems as Rick & Morty, The Matrix, and The Witcher novels. Superman joins an earlier ‘The Batman’ coin as delving into the copious DC Comics Universe.
The reverse face features a classic view of the Kryptonian hero hovering over his beloved Metropolis, in front of the Daily Planet building where his alter-ego, Clark Kent, works as a journalist. Superman is highlighted with a colour application, as is his logo at the bottom. The obverse is an interesting, layered montage, with a space scene in the centre, and a raised circle with the issuing Public Seal of Niue on it. A border depicting a repeating trio of Superman silhouettes surrounds it all.
The coin design succeeds in showcasing this incredibly popular comic book icon, and makes a great change from the usual standard relief offerings that we’ve had over the last decade. The coin comes boxed with a Certificate of Authenticity, and has a mintage capped at just 300 pieces. The serial number is engraved on the coin edge. It’s available to order now.
