The brilliantly anarchic animated series Rick & Morty gets an equally brilliant coin from the Mint of Gdańsk

Animation is a true art form, and comes in many forms. The most popular of those are the many modern incarnations in popular culture from around the world. Japanese Anime is a prime example, and so are the comedy series that attract huge audience figure. The Simpsons is a prime example, although for me, South Park, Archer, Family Guy, Samurai Jack, The Tick, and, perhaps most of all, Rick & Morty, are at the top of the pile.

A surreal experience, Rick & Morty charts the misadventures of an unbalanced genius scientist, and his naive grandson, Morty. An alcoholic, who has created chaos across multiple dimensions, either personally, or by one of the many other Ricks in those alternate realities, he nevertheless loves Morty, and seems to be on a mission to broaden his horizons. Often, a series like this that achieves cult status, is often just a pale shadow of the legend in reality, but this show is genuinely an absolute blast. Even the change of voice actors for the latest series hasn’t dampened my love of this manic show.

DAYLIGHTUV LIGHT

There have been a couple of prior coins from other producers, with Glines & Rhodes issuing a very cool Pickle Rick shaped coin (Don’t ask…!), and the NZ Mint adding their own to the mix. The Mint of Gdańsk has joined the fray with their own, and we reckon it’s a corker. Employing the classic two-ounce, antiqued, high-relief format, the reverse depicts the pair in front of a portal. Rick, with his trademark dribble, is pulling open Morty’s eyelids. Best of all, some of the colour is UV-sensitive, so glows in the dark.

The obverse is about as simple as it gets, and unthemed. The packaging is okay, but a bit generic, and we’d have loved for something a bit more custom (glow-in-the-dark green, gloss wood perhaps), but really, it’s all about the coin. Here, the producer has hit the bullseye, and it’s a terrific coin showcasing this anarchic show perfectly. The high-relief is used perfectly, and the design is bang on point. Our favourite pop-culture coin from the Mint of Gdańsk to date. Available to order now, it has a mintage of 300.
