Street Fighter II Arcade (2021 New Zealand Mint)

STREET FIGHTER II ARCADE (2021 New Zealand Mint)

It seems that the darling of the moment in the popular culture genre is the anniversary of the legendary fighting game, Street Fighter, with both LPM and the NZ Mint issuing several different ranges. The latest is from the latter, and rather than being part of a uniquely Street Fighter series, it’s the fourth annual release in the mints beautifully presented ‘Arcade Cabinet’ range.

The coin carries possibly the most classic image of the game, that of Ryu firing his Hadoken energy ball at Ken. If you know the game, you’ll have seen the image. The first coin in this series, Space Invaders, had a cool lenticular effect that simulated the movement of the aliens in that game, but sadly, the mint hasn’t employed that technique since. It would have worked well here for the energy ball, and maybe had more appeal for the intended audience.

Nevertheless, if you’re a fan of the series, and as we said, they are beautifully presented, you’ll want to add this to your collection. The 40 mm, 1 oz silver coin has a mintage of 2,000 pieces, and is available now.
