Two years into its new bullion coin programme with the African state, the Republic of Congo, Scottsdale are releasing higher quality proof variants of the coin with a selective colour enhancement. The first coin in Scottsdale Mint’s annual Congo Silverback series arrived last July, followed up by the standard version of the design seen here earlier this year.

Pretty well recieved on the market, these are cool designs, different to most of the wildlife themed bullion coins out there which often have a tweaked version of a recurring design, much like the Rwandan wildlife series. Last years coin was a very dynamic piece of art, this year simply went with imposing. The face-on look at the gorilla was a strong design and has lent itself well to some colour. Other than that the design remains unchanged from the bullion variant. Colour is restricted to the fur and is essentially greyscale, so even those averse to bright colour will not be put off with this subtle implementation. The proof finish is a welcome bonus.

As it’s a proof commemorative rather than a bullion coin, the packaging has been enhanced considerably. Instead of the simple plastic sleeve, this one is encapsulated, in a coin box, and packaged in a coloured shipper box holding a Certificate of Authenticity. Expected to sell for just under $100, it should be available any time now.
