Major League Baseball returns to coins with a big range from Agoro, covering top teams and tournaments
Agoro, the name for the collectible coin part of the New Zealand Mint, recently added Major League Baseball to their portfolio, and they’ve decided that December is going to be a huge month for new issues. Below, you’ll see everything released as part of the new wave, but we’re expecting the mint to tap into this huge licence extensively through 2025.
For those unaware, MLB is Major League Baseball, one of the big four sports franchises in North America. There are 30 teams, divided equally between the National League, and the American League, the winners of each meeting in the famous World Series, won in 2024 by the LA Dodgers. While very US-centric, the sport nevertheless is staggeringly popular, drawing in over 70 million spectators in the 2023 season. More than enough to buy up a few coins…
The big release is the appearance of the franchise in Agoro’s trading coin range. With these, there are 51 different coins, divided into six bands of varying rarities. The kicker is in the way you buy them. Each sealed box contains two randomly inserted coins. At $399 USD for two one-ounce silver coins (with a 1-in-250 box chance of the 1/4oz gold), it’s always been a hard ask, in our view, but with baseball, there’s already a massive trading card market used to those odds, so Agoro is on safer ground here. It’s likely why the mintage has doubled over previous sets.
For the first three sets, we got images of every coin, but since then, we’re not provided with them, so what you see above are samples from each coloured rarity class. Sorry. We’ve added the mintage of each type underneath the image, and except for the gold, there are ten designs in each colour class. If you’re happy to gamble on the contents, it’s a clever addition to the card market, but prices of previous sets on the aftermarket have been just ridiculous.
We noted that most of the new MLB issues are dated 2025, but this one is 2024. Our guess is that we can expect this series to be an annual event, but that’s just an educated guess on our part.

This year’s World Series was as big an event as usual, with the LA Dodgers meeting the NY Yankees for the first time in the World Series since 1981. It was eventually won by the Dodgers, a feat watched by almost 16 million people per game in the US, and 13 million in Japan.
This coin, also dated 2024, is unusual in this selection in coming in both one-ounce, and three ounce variants. Both carry identical designs, with the only major differences being the increased diameter, and higher denomination of the heavier coin. The baseball-style stitching on the obverse is a nice touch, and the presentation looks spot-on. Again, we reckon this will be an annual release as long as Agoro have the licence.

While they may have lost the 2024 World Series, the New York Yankees remain the most successful team in baseball history. To date, they have won it 27 times. For context, the next most wins, by the St. Louis Cardinals, is only 11. Legendary players like Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, have worked their magic in NY. Indeed, some 44 players, and 11 managers, have been inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Like all the coins below, this one reproduces the team logo in three ounces of silver, and is suitably coloured on the reverse face. The presentation is heavily themed, and it will be available to order on the 17th December, so set your alarms…

Playing in 13 World Series, and winning 9 of them, the Boston Red Sox are a hugely successful team. Founded in 1901, they have played at the same stadium since 1912. They’re owned by Fenway Sports Group, who also own my beloved Liverpool Football Club.
Again, the coin reproduces the unusual logo, and the packaging is fully themed.

The Houston Astros, based in Texas, are one of the biggest teams in the American League, and won the World Series in 2017, and 2022. They were one of the eight founding teams of the American League. This coin is a more traditional round shape, and brightly coloured.

The Baltimore Orioles are another of the American League’s eight charter teams from 1901. They’ve won three World Series (1966, 1970, 1983) from a total of six appearances. Rather than the team’s logo, Agoro have chosen the cap insignia for the coin, which seems a sensible choice compared to the text logo.

The Milwaukee Brewers are a surprise choice, not being one of the more successful teams, and never having won a World Series. They joined the league in 1969, although teams with the same name, most famously in Minor League Baseball, date back much earlier. This is another round coin carrying the team’s logo.

The last of the six released this month is the San Diego Padres, and is another shaped coin. Like the Brewers, the Padres have yet to win a World Series, and were late to the game, joining MLB in 1969. The logo is a simple initials design, and as a result, employs less colour than the others in this range. Fans will like the clean design, but it does lack appeal compared to some of the others.
