Star Wars Guards of the Empire: Sith Trooper (2021 NZ Mint)
It’s hard to get too enthused about another Star Wars coin given the number we’ve covered since the New Zealand Mint acquired the licence in 2014, but we have to admit to a soft spot for their ‘Guards of the Empire’ series. An antique-finished, one-ounce silver coin series in a rectangular format, it takes a look at the often overlooked cannon-fodder of the baddies. Vader and the Emperor get all the glory, but it’s the soldiers dressed in custom Tupperware that inevitably fall in the thousands.
The Sith Trooper released today is the seventh to date and again, does a fine job of showing off, in colour, one of these poor sods, soon to be deceased, while also using the background field to get across the sheer numbers of these troopers there were. It’s actually a really well realised series, and easily one of our favourites.
Packaging is as high-quality as always, the NZ Mint certainly drawing no complaints from us in that regard, and it has a sensible mintage of 2,000 pieces. We’ve seen a few of these in hand and they’re a great piece for the Star Wars fan. Available now for just under $100 USD. We’ve added this one to our very comprehensive round-up of the mints Star Wars releases.
