The Royal Mint’s ‘Myths & Legends’ bullion series continues its telling of Beowulf with ‘Grendel’s Mother’ in silver and gold
The Royal Mint’s ‘Myths & Legends’ series has appeared in sets of three, with Robin Hood, and the Arthurian legend comprising the first two sets. The third is a wander through another medieval classic, Beowulf, an epic poem of Old English origin written by an anonymous poet, highlights Beowulf’s valorous battles against three monstrous foes – Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and a dragon.
This second coin depicts his battle against Grendel’s mother, and he is depicted fighting the monstrous woman while dressed in full Anglo-Saxon warriors armour, and wielding a sword. David Lawrence has done a fine job here, successfully evoking the artistic style of the period with a modern twist. Much better than his Camelot designs.
As usual, there are one-ounce 0.999 silver, and one-ounce 0.9999 gold variants, both with mintages uncapped through 2025. No doubt a ten-ounce silver version will follow in due course. Both metals are available to order now.
Also joining the Myths & legends line-up is the latest ten-ounce variant of an earlier release, something common in this series. Merlin first appeared as a proof range in March of 2023, with bullion arriving soon after. Like the aforementioned Beowulf release, those were also released in gold and silver one-ounce formats. The 89 mm diameter is impressive, even though the art benefits little from it.
