Let’s have a catchup of new pop-culture coin and foil releases from the masters of them, Agoro by the New Zealand Mint

They’ve been busy little beavers down in New Zealand, where Agoro, the collectible department of the New Zealand Mint, is based, and it’s been a while since we had a look, so combined with some updates to our Thematic Guides here are some of them. They’re pop-culture specialists, so it’s the usual mix of Marvel, Star Wars, Harry Potter, and more, but there’s also the final issue in the much-liked, 22-coin Tarot range.

2025 HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS

The second of Agoro’s new Harry Potter series, ‘Book Covers’ is, in our view, and fine idea for a coin series, much better than the use of Hollywood film posters, which often highlight the actors, rather than the most important thing, the original inspiration for the stories they’re portraying. It makes a nice change.

In the case of this series, it goes back to the original covers, more specifically, the US covers by artist, Mary GrandPré, which were distinctly different from the UK covers by Cliff Wright. This one is Chamber of Secrets, and an attractive design with a very distinctive style. A two-ounce coin with a 1k mintage, it has that excellent packaging this producer is well known for. The original art was much wider, as it covered the back and folds of the cover, and we reckon that would make a good silver foil series, given Agoro is back producing them in increased numbers.

STAR WARS BLUEPRINTS: 2025 THE DEATH STAR

A long time issuer of silver foils, often depicting comic book covers or film posters, Agoro, after a quiet period when the format seemed to fall out of favour, are back in the saddle, and launching several new designs. Most seem to take the safe route of simply reproducing posters, like the Marvel Infinity Saga range, but these are more original.

Back in 2017, Agoro (then using their NZ Mint name) issued a series of six coins depicting blueprints of vessels from the Star Wars universe. It was a neat idea, but the tiny canvas meant detail was ill-defined, with the coin in hand looking less clear than the usual renders. We said at the time, the idea was great, but better suited to their foil format. Fast-forward to 2025, and it seems the producer agrees.

This series uses their premium foil format, utilising an ounce of silver to create something up to 262 mm in size, and here, the detail shines. The first issue is the Death Star, and it’s a fan friendly look at this massive beast of destruction. The obverse has a pattern upon it, along with inscriptions denoting the composition, and the issue details. A far superior version of the coin originals, the next release, the Millennium Falcon, debuts on 03 April.

TAROT CARDS: 2025 THE WORLD

With a debut back in 2025, we never thought that a tarot card series would be all that popular, but we were definitely wrong on that. Early issues of this series rapidly started to attract aftermarket auction prices of ten times the issue price, and each one sold out. Now, 22 issues later, the series has come to an end.

Each rectangular coin features one of the Major Arcana cards, highlighted in colour, and struck to a proof finish in an ounce of silver. They really aren’t any more complex than that, but along with some neat packaging, they seemed to capture the attention of collectors.

This issue, The World, is the final one, so we’re particularly pleased to see another long-term series finish to completion, and while this is a little less impressive than that of Scottsdale Mint’s epic 60-coin Biblical Series, at 22 coins, it’s still a fine achievement in its own right, so congrats to the mint for sticking with this surprise hit range. You can see all the coins in our comprehensive Coin Series Profile. Agoro has just started a Star Signs of the Zodiac series in the same vein.

Agoro is quite prolific, so we obviously can’t cover all the new releases like we used to, but regular readers will know about our Thematic Guides, which try to summarise as best we can, all the coins released around a specific theme, many of which are popular culture in nature. We periodically update them with new issues, and I’ve been doing a little of that over the last week to bring them more up-to-date.

As a result, you can see more releases in our guides to the Marvel Universe, the Star Wars Universe, and the Harry Potter Wizarding World, amongst others, on that page. If you have an interest in any of those subjects, or some others we’ve covered, please check them out. Most cover the issues from multiple mints.
