It’s been thirty years since Robert Zemekis directed Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd and a superb cast to create what would become one of the biggest cult movies of all time. Two sequels followed that further cemented its place in movie history. Telling the story of Marty McFly and Doc Browns travels through time, it was October 21st 2015 that they headed to in the future, now known as Back to the Future Day.

The Perth Mint has launched three coins for the occasion, two of the their standard format issues of  a ¼oz gold and a 1oz coloured silver, and a 2oz, very unusual coin shaped like the hoverboard from Back to the Future II. The standard format coins carry the same image, that of the DeLorean car in motion being powered by a lightning strike. It’s coloured on the silver and clean struck on the gold. The silver also benefits from some very cool packaging, a plastic replica of the famous DeLorean car that lights up with the blue LED lights the Perth Mint so effectively used for the Star Trek coins that launched earlier this year. It lights up when the bonnet/hood of the car is opened to reveal the coin. The gold, like the New Zealand Mint coins, eschews the fancy packaging and stays with a classy wooden box.

The last coin is both the most interesting, and the one most likely to divide opinion. Shaped and coloured like the floating Hoverboard from the second movie, it also sits in a custom display stand to give the appearance of floating, achieved by the subtle use of magnets. Coming in at 2oz of silver, it’s brightly coloured to replicate the gaudy finish of the movie prop. It’s certainly authentic, but only you can decide if it’s attractive.

Available to order now from the Perth Mint website, and from dealers worldwide.
