Art Mint brings its crisp artistic style to a beautiful, traditional Chinese Dragon art coin in a choice of two finishes

Just like the last time it came around in 2012, the Year of the Dragon in the Chinese Lunar Calendar has brought with it a notable uptick in the number of dragon themed coins being released. The dragon has always been popular, and has gone hand-in-hand with the growth in the Asian numismatic market, so it’s perfectly understandable. The issue producers have, is in making something that stands out, and there’s a choice between gimmicks, or quality design.

As you’d expect from Art Mint, they’ve gone the quality route, with this quite beautiful design. Rather than take a European look at the subject, the mint has employed the talents of a traditional Chinese artist to produce something with the right flavour, right down to the whiskers and the flaming pearl. There’s a sharp definition to the high-relief on this coin, no doubt learned from their decade old Mandala Art series, that works extremely well, A superior design to the first coin in this Dragon Art series, which depicted a creature in the Qing Dynasty style.

Everything is bound by a smooth rim, on what is engraved the serial number. The obverse is a simple Public Seal of Niue, surrounded by the usual inscribed issue details, all inside a repeating pattern border. There are a choice of two finishes, Our pick, as always, is the antique-finish, but there’s also a bright gilded variant. I’d love to see that gilded coin with an antique wash as well, but we know the gold is very popular in Asian markets, particularly.

Best of all, each of the variants of this five-ounce silver coin have a mintage of just 100 pieces. Art Mint coins have a knack of selling out in pretty short order, and it’s hard to imagine that won’t be the case here. The coin will come boxed with a Certificate of Authenticity, and are available to order now, with shipping from late April. The mint has an early-bird special price on for a short period. A very elegant coin, in the traditional style.
