Germania Mint debuted a relatively innocuous two-ounce cast silver bar adorned with a beautiful portrait of the Norse goddess, Freyja, just last January. It caught the eye of collectors, and this six-bar series, along with a companion ‘Gods’ series of the same size, kicked off a whole program, drawing in many producers along the way. One such series, produced with US dealer GovMint, is called Americana, and as the name suggests, showcases various icons of the United States. The first two bars featured the Bald Eagle, and Uncle Sam, and here we have a native legend of the continental United States, the American Bison, a behemoth often tipping the scales at over 1.2 tonnes. The status of the bison in American lore is ironic, given the slaughter of almost all of them, with numbers dropping from 60 million, to under a thousand, but sense prevailed, and they’re now more numerous, fortunately, and often battering the occasional dumb tourist looking for a selfie. Karma, indeed.

It’s another terrific piece of art, with the profile portrait of this glorious animal taking the spotlight, with the US flag, and a herd of horses, in the background. It all has that retro 50s feel to it, eschewing bright colours for a more realistic, traditional depiction. The back of the bar is the same as all bars in this programme, and the serial number (of 999) in inscribed here. There’s a neat card box, with a hologram adorned certificate of authenticity, all inside a themed slipcover.
