The Perth Mint’s Captain : Vessel range of Star Trek coins has reached the end with a pair celebrating the last Trek series since , Star Trek Voyager. The range launched to great fanfare with the iconic Captain Kirk and USS Enterprise from the original 1960’s series and then jumped to the 1980’s with the most popular version of Star Trek, The Next Generation. Deep Space 9 followed on shortly after, and then Voyager.

The series premiered on September 26, 2001, on the UPN television network with the final episode airing on May 13, 2005. It is the final Star Trek television series to date and is the only Trek program to not be rebooted by the eleventh film in the franchise. The show is set in the nearby regions of the Milky Way galaxy, beginning in 2151 (115 years before the original series) when Jonathan Archer becomes the captain of the Enterprise. It ends in 2161 with the formation of the United Federation of Planets. The series takes place aboard the starship Enterprise NX-01, Earth’s first warp-5-capable ship, which has been designed for long-range exploration of the galaxy.

As before, there are two coins available either individually, or as a special two-coin set, but this time there aren’t any more series to come. Packaging is great, if bulky, with the individual coins sitting in a neat led-lit custom display unit. The two-coin set was the one that everybody initially rushed out for, but later issues have cooled considerably and are now relatively easy to pick up. Presented in a reproduction matter transporter, it’s also led-lit. It’s a shame that this will be the same for all the five two-coin sets as having five of them to display seems a little repetitive and space-consuming.

Available to buy from the Perth Mint website today, it’s much easier to get a two-coin set than with the first release, although they do sell out eventually.
