Quite a mix this month from the Perth Mint. The Disney Aurora coin is struck for the New Zealand Mint and we covered that earlier today, the Stock Horse is struck for EMK in Germany and we covered that a few days ago, and the Chimera is struck for MNI which we’ll cover tomorrow, along with the 1kg Kook.

The rest is laid out below as the second Star Trek release has apparently been delayed a month. Big release this month is ‘Sunburnt Country’,  a Natasha Muhl designed four-coin set celebrating the poem My Country by Dorothea Mackellar. Available as a four-coin set, or as individual coins released one at a time over the next few months. The solo coin is $104.00, with the four-coin set coming in at $416.00.

Next up is the penultimate coin in the excellent Australian Age of Dinosaurs series designed by Perth Mint stalwart Tom Vaughan. This one features an Ankylosaurus and is a fine design. Struck to the usual Perth Mint format, it will be part of a nice set when the final Muttaburrasaurus coin is released later this year. This one sells for $99.00.

Finally we have the next three-coin set in the five-set, five year ANZAC Spirit program. Commemorating the centenary of the ANZAC forces and their efforts in the First World War, these join a huge variety of commemorative coins on the subject which makes standing out from the crowd much more difficult. We think these are okay, but there are better coins out there, especially the stamp-shaped coins from the NZ Post that the mint has ironically also made available this month which we covered last month. The three-coin set is $189.00 and designed by Aleysha Howarth and Wade Robinson.

All are available to buy now and the Perth Mint logo and the article base will take you to the new releases page and also give AgAuNEWS a little boost as well.

SUNBURNT COUNTRY RECTANGULAR SET

MINTS DESCRIPTION

Dorothea Mackellar’s My Country is one of Australia’s most widely recited and beloved poems. Reflective of the author’s great love of the Australian landscape, the poem has become one of the most recognised and celebrated pieces of Australian poetry ever written.

In 1904, after spending an extended period abroad in London, and feeling homesick for Australia, Dorothea began writing My Country. Several re-writes later, the poem was published in The Spectator in London in 1908, under its original title, Core of My Heart. The poem presented a contrast between the English and Australian landscapes, and inspired patriotic sentiments and a sense of great national pride, particularly in the context of World War I.

As a tribute to this historical poem and as homage to the stunning Australian landscapes it describes, The Perth Mint issues the first individual 1oz 99.9% pure silver rectangle coin and a four-coin set. The remaining three individual releases will be released bi-monthly. Issued as legal tender under the 2015-PM-SUNBURNT-BOXESAustralian Currency Act 1965, The Perth Mint will release no more than 4,250 2015 Sunburnt Country – A Land of Sweeping Plains 1oz Silver Rectangle Coin and no more than 750 2015 Sunburnt Country 1oz Silver Rectangle Four-Coin Set.

Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.

Each subsequent coin in the series, which makes up the four-coin set, also depicts a coloured image of an Australian landscape with an Australian animal. Each design includes the inscription I LOVE A SUNBURNT COUNTRY and a line from the poem describing the landscape depicted.

AGE OF DINOSAURS 04: MINMI

MINTS DECRIPTION

The Minmi is the fourth coin in this exciting new five-coin series featuring Australian dinosaurs that existed in the Cretaceous Period between 112 and 102 million years ago.

Minmi was a quadruped which walked on all four legs, although its hind legs were slightly longer than its front legs. At only three metres long, this dinosaur was small by armoured dinosaur standards and would have browsed on ferns and other low growing plants. Minmi possessed a horny beak with which it would have been able to selectively nip off small fruits and seeds.

DESIGN: The coin’s reverse depicts the Australian dinosaur Minmi paravertebra set against colourful, prehistoric vegetation. The inscription MINMI, the coin’s weight and purity, and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark are also incorporated into the design.

PRESENTATION: This coin is housed in The Perth Mint’s grey presentation case with a wonderfully illustrated shipper, and is accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
