Superb Women of France historical coin series continues into 2017 with Catherine de Medici

Last year, the world’s oldest mint debuted a sequel sereis to one of our favourite ranges of coins from recent years. You’ve often heard us praise the Monnaie de Paris series, From Clovis to Republic, one struck in what the mint calls its historical strike and designed by modern French icon, Christian Lacroix. This basically entails having no surrounding rim to restrain the coin into its perfectly round shape. This results in the metal flowing out slightly and forming an imperfectly round final result. It looks much like a refined version of the old hammered technique of coin production, hence historical.

After five years of producing the set of fifteen Clovis coins, 2016 saw the debut of a sequel series called Women of France. This will look at women that have helped guide and define France through the ages. The first three coins saw Clotilde, Mathilde and Jeanne d’Arc remembered and there will be three coins launched this year in continuation. The first is a French icon, Catherine de Medici, a woman ironically hailing from a family definitively Italian.

The coin design follows a tried and tested path. The reverse face features a depiction of Catherine de Medici with her name and lifespan inscribed in a good-looking font. The background has a fine, repeating pattern from the period. The pattern is also present on the obverse which depicts the beautiful Chateau de Chenonceau, a palace associated with this key character in French history. The chateau name, the coins denomination and date are also inscribed on this face. An artichoke, an edible thistle associated with Catherine, is also depicted.

As before there will be two variants of this design, there seemingly being no sign of the beautiful one-ounce gold version that was particularly impressive in Joan of Arc form. The most popular will be the 0.900 silver version of 22.2 grams in weight. The coin is limited to 5,000 units, a number five times greater than the ¼oz gold. Both come in the usual Monnaie de Paris small box and with a serialised certificate of authenticity. It’s another beautiful coin, available to buy now.

CATHERINE DE MEDICI

Catherine de’ Medici, (13 April 1519 – 5 January 1589), daughter of Lorenzo II de’ Medici and of Madeleine de La Tour d’Auvergne, was an Italian noblewoman who was Queen of France from 1547 until 1559, as the wife of King Henry II. As the mother of three sons who became kings of France during her lifetime, she had extensive, if at times varying, influence in the political life of France. For a time, she ruled France as its regent.

In 1533, at the age of fourteen, Caterina married Henry, second son of King Francis I and Queen Claude of France. Under the gallicised version of her name, Catherine de Médicis, she was Queen consort of France as the wife of King Henry II of France from 1547 to 1559. Throughout his reign, Henry excluded Catherine from participating in state affairs and instead showered favours on his chief mistress, Diane de Poitiers, who wielded much influence over him. Henry’s death thrust Catherine into the political arena as mother of the frail fifteen-year-old King Francis II. When he died in 1560, she became regent on behalf of her ten-year-old son King Charles IX and was granted sweeping powers. After Charles died in 1574, Catherine played a key role in the reign of her third son, Henry III. He dispensed with her advice only in the last months of her life.

Catherine’s three sons reigned in an age of almost constant civil and religious war in France. The problems facing the monarchy were complex and daunting but Catherine was able to keep the monarchy and the state institutions functioning even at a minimum level. At first, Catherine compromised and made concessions to the rebelling Protestants, or Huguenots, as they became known. She failed, however, to grasp the theological issues that drove their movement. Later she resorted, in frustration and anger, to hard-line policies against them. In return, she came to be blamed for the excessive persecutions carried out under her sons’ rule, in particular for the St. Bartholomew’s Day massacre of 1572, in which thousands of Huguenots were killed in Paris and throughout France. THE CHATEAU DE CHENONCEAU

The Château de Chenonceau is a French château spanning the River Cher, near the small village of Chenonceaux in the Indre-et-Loire département of the Loire Valley in France. It is one of the best-known châteaux of the Loire valley. The estate of Chenonceau is first mentioned in writing in the 11th century. The current château was built in 1514–1522 on the foundations of an old mill and was later extended to span the river. The bridge over the river was built (1556-1559) to designs by the French Renaissance architect Philibert de l’Orme, and the gallery on the bridge (1570–1576) to designs by Jean Bullant.
After King Henry II died in 1559, his strong-willed widow and regent Catherine de’ Medici forced Diane to exchange it for the Château Chaumont.[8] Queen Catherine then made Chenonceau her own favorite residence, adding a new series of gardens. As Regent of France, Catherine spent a fortune on the château and on spectacular nighttime parties. In 1560, the first ever fireworks display seen in France took place during the celebrations marking the ascension to the throne of Catherine’s son Francis II. The grand gallery, which extended along the existing bridge to cross the entire river, was dedicated in 1577. Catherine also added rooms between the chapel and the library on the east side of the corps de logis, as well as a service wing on the west side of the entry courtyard. (Source: Wikipedia)
