As their innovative Mission X coin series concludes, PMC revisits the concept with Warriors Through Time, starting with the Cowboy
Precious Metal Collectors are one of those producers that likes to experiment with something a little more unusual than the traditional coin, and employ some impressive techniques in doing so. Their Tutankhamun dagger reproduction was especially impressive in bringing a genuine historical artefact to numismatic life, and the Mission X series, while less extreme, was a neat twist on the use of high-relief in a more traditional format.
With the Mission X series now concluded after three issues, PMC have embarked on a kind of sequel series that employs the rectangular format and style of the earlier coins. Called Warriors of History, it will feature different famous groups of warriors, and do so in an almost action-figure in a box style. The first issue is ‘Cowboy’, and on the reverse face, inside a raised border frame, is a cowboy figure, and arrayed around him are many of the accoutrements of the profession. The figure is Pat Garrett, the lawman that ended the crime spree of infamous outlaw Billy the Kid.
There are various guns, a knife, a whip, saddlebags, spurs, boots, and much more. An extra cowboy hat, laid flat is gilded, contrasting nicely against the antique finish used on the rest of the coin. The obverse depicts a cowboy with his pistol drawn, but the main element here is a large sheriff’s badge, in the centre of which is the national shield of Samoa, the coin issuer.
It’s all very well realised, and an unusual take on a subject surprisingly uncommon on modern coins. It comes boxed, and with a certificate of authenticity. The mintage is capped at 399 pieces. We were fortunate to be shown the next two coins in this series, and they maintain the quality of this one, which also looked great in hand. Cowboy is available to pre-order now.
